VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN SEASON FINALE TO NSU

NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team fell in their season finale on Sunday afternoon to Norfolk State University 3-1 at Gill Gymnasium as the Spartans won 25-22, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20.

A Ravyn Richardson kill gave Hampton an early 8-5 lead in the opening set before Norfolk State took control of the set with a 17-3 run to lead 22-11 after a ball handling error by Hampton.  The Lady Pirates had a run of their own scoring nine of the next ten points to trim the deficit to 23-20 after a Lena Washington service ace.

Following a kill by Sydney Dailey of NSU to lead 24-20, Hampton got a kill by Richardson and an ace by Ashlyn Dunlop to get to 24-22 but NSU got the final point of the set to win 25-22.

In the second set, a kill by Dunlop gave Hampton an early 8-3 lead.  NSU responded scoring the next seven points to lead 10-8 after a Dominique Parker kill.  The Lady Pirates ripped off nine of the next 11 points to take a 17-12 advantage on a Micah Leavell kill.   The Spartans got within 22-20, but that was as close as they got as a pair of kills by Leavell ended the second set with Hampton up 25-20.

After a third set that saw Norfolk State race out to a 13-5 lead to start the third set en route to a 25-15 win, Hampton opened the final on a 9-5 run following an attack error by NSU.  The hosts took charge on an 11-3 run with a kill by Uwem Etuk to lead 16-12.  An 8-4 Hampton flurry tied the score at 20 following a Brianna Lilly service ace, but that was the last point scored for Hampton as the hosts finished it off with a 25-20 win.

Leavell had another double-double with 20 kills and 11 digs, while Washington had 14 kills and five digs for Hampton who finished its season with a 6-17 record and a 5-7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division mark.
