RICHMOND, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team continued the 2016 Barclays Classic on Tuesday afternoon with a 65-52 loss to Richmond in the Robins Center.
The Pirates are now 1-3 on the season.
Freshman
Jermaine Marrow continued his hot start to the season, pouring in a team-high 16 points on 6-for-16 shooting and hitting two of his five 3-pointers. He also had three assists to lead the Pirates.
AJ Astroth led Hampton with 11 rebounds.
The Pirates shot 32.7 percent (18-for-55) from the floor for the game, struggling in the first half with a 29.6 percent clip (8-for-27) from the floor. Hampton made five of its 20 3-pointers and went 11-for-17 (64.7 percent) from the free throw line.
The Pirates also held a 44-32 edge in rebounding – including a 14-5 advantage on the offensive glass.
Imani Miller gave the Pirates an early 5-3 lead with a jumper at the 16:05 mark, before the Spiders went on a 9-2 run – taking a 12-7 lead with 8:12 left in the first half following a layup from TJ Cline. Hampton fought back to tie the game twice, including at 17-17 at the 4:28 mark after a
Branden Aughburns layup.
But the Spiders scored eight of the last 10 points of the half, going into the break with a 25-19 lead.
Richmond opened the second half on a 19-6 run, opening up a 44-25 lead – its largest of the game – with 12:47 to play after a layup from Khwan Fore. The Spiders maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
Marrow hit a jumper with 1:10 left to cut the lead to 62-52, but Richmond scored the game's last three points to clinch the win.
Richmond (3-1) shot 44.2 percent (23-for-52) from the floor – including a 61.5 percent clip in the second half. The Spiders, despite their first-half offensive struggles, had six players score at least eight points.
Cline led the Spiders with 17 points.
