VOLLEYBALL COMPLETES PLAY IN WILDCAT CLASSIC

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Hampton University volleyball team completed play in the Wildcat Classic on Saturday in the John M. Belk Arena, falling to both East Carolina and Presbyterian in straight sets.
 
Allysa Medina was named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
East Carolina 3, Hampton 0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-21)
Medina racked up a career-high 13 kills to go along with eight digs on defense, while Tatyana Thomas and Reeana Richardson each added five kills. Mallory Beard had a team-high 10 digs, while Lena Washington, who also had four kills, added nine digs.
 
Kennedy Kenney had three blocks, while Alexandra Erhart had 21 assists.
 
The Lady Pirates (0-6) led 4-3 early in the first set, before East Carolina went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. But Hampton answered with three straight points, tying the set at 7-7 after a kill from Erhart, a block from Asya Patterson and Kyndall Nicholas, and an ECU error.
 
But ECU scored the next seven points to take a 14-7 lead. That lead later grew to 18-10, before a kill from Thomas later in the set cut the lead to 19-13.
 
ECU closed the set on a 6-2 run to go up 1-0 in the match.
 
East Carolina hit .433 in the second set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the process. The lead later grew to 10-1, but later in the set Richardson tallied a kill to cut the lead to 14-5. ECU later held a 21-9 lead, before the Lady Pirates went on a 4-1 spurt to cut the lead to 22-13.
 
ECU then scored the next three points to go up 2-0.
 
East Carolina opened up the third set on a 5-0 run and later held a 10-5 lead. But the Lady Pirates answered with a 10-0 run, rallying back to take a 15-10 lead after a kill from Medina. In fact, during that run, Medina had five kills and a block.
 
ECU scored the next five points to tie the set at 15-15, before a Medina kill and an East Carolina error gave the Lady Pirates a 17-15 lead. Another ECU error put the Lady Pirates up 19-16.
 
But ECU scored the next seven points to take a 23-19 lead; ultimately, East Carolina ended the set on a 9-2 run to take the third set 25-21 and win the match in straight sets.
 
The Lady Pirates held an 8-5 edge in team blocks and a 45-43 advantage in digs.
 
Presbyterian 3, Hampton 0 (25-20, 25-16, 27-25)
Richardson had 11 kills to lead the Lady Pirates, while Medina followed up her career performance against East Carolina with eight kills and a team-high 10 digs. Washington added seven kills and a team-high three blocks, as well as eight digs.
 
Erhart had 23 assists.
 
Presbyterian jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open the first set, and later held an 11-4 lead. But the Lady Pirates slowly clawed their way back, cutting the lead to 14-9 after a kill from Richardson. Nicholas and Washington later teamed on a block to cut Presbyterian's lead to 18-14.
 
After Presbyterian scored the next point, going up 19-14, the Lady Pirates went on a 4-1 spurt to close the gap to 20-18. But Presbyterian closed the set on a 5-2 run to take the frame 25-20 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
The Lady Pirates hit .294 in the first set.
 
Presbyterian hit .314 in the first set and followed that up by hitting .304 in the second set. A Patterson ace tied the set at 5-5, before the Blue Hose scored the next five points to take a 10-5 lead. Hampton closed the lead to 12-8 before Presbyterian went on a 9-2 run to take a 21-10 lead.
 
Hampton then scored four of the next six points, cutting the lead to 23-14.
 
But Presbyterian held firm and took the second set by scoring two of the next four points, going up 2-0 in the match.
 
A kill from Kenney capped a 4-1 run to open the third set for the Lady Pirates, and they later led 8-4 after a kill from Washington. Presbyterian went on a 6-2 run to tie the set at 10-10, before Hampton went on a 6-2 run to take a 16-12 lead after another Kennedy kill.
 
Hampton later led 19-15, before Presbyterian went on a 6-1 run to take a 21-20 lead. The Lady Pirates scored three of the next four points, going up 23-22 after a kill from Washington. Presbyterian scored the next two points to go up 24-23, before Hampton answered with back-to-back points of its own, going up 25-24 on another Washington kill.
 
But Presbyterian scored the last three points to take the set.
 
Both teams hit .161 for the match, and the Lady Pirates held the edge in kills (34-31), assists (33-27), and digs (40-35).
