VOLLEYBALL LOSES HOME FINALE TO NORFOLK STATE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball lost its final home match of the season Sunday afternoon at Holland Hall, as rival Norfolk State defeated the Lady Pirates 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-22).
 
The Lady Pirates fell to 3-21 overall and 3-8 in MEAC play.
 
Reeana Richardson led the Lady Pirates with 14 kills on the afternoon, hitting .320, while Tatyana Thomas added seven kills and Allysa Medina, in her final home match, added five to go along with six digs. Thomas hit .545 for the match.
 
Kyndall Nicholas had five kills and no errors in six attacks, hitting a team-best .833 while also recording a team-high five blocks.
 
Brianna Lilly had 15 assists and two of Hampton's three service aces, while Alexandra Erhart had 10.
 
Mallory Beard had a team-high 10 digs.
 
The Lady Pirates hit .195 (38 kills, 21 errors in 87 attacks) for the match and held a 7-3 edge in blocks.
 
Erhart have the Lady Pirates a 3-1 lead with a kill early in the first set, before Norfolk State (3-20, 2-8 MEAC) went on an 8-1 run to take a 9-4 lead. A 3-1 spurt from Hampton cut the gap to 10-7 before the Spartans opened up an 18-9 lead following an 8-2 run.
 
Hampton went on a 5-2 run, cutting the lead to 20-14 after a Richardson kill, but Norfolk State scored five of the last eight points of the set to take a 1-0 lead.
 
Norfolk State hit .500 in the first set.
 
The Lady Pirates hit a team-best .258 (14 kills, six errors in 31 attacks) in the second set, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead. A block from Nicholas and Washington later in the set put Hampton up 11-5, and the Lady Pirates later held a 17-12 lead.
 
But Norfolk State went on a 7-1 run to take a 19-18 lead, and Hampton tied the score four times in the closing moments – the last one coming at 23-23 after a kill from Thomas.
 
But the Spartans scored the next two points to take the set and go up 2-0 in the match.
 
Hampton jumped out to a quick lead, going up 6-2 early in the third set after Erhart and Thomas paired on a block. But after Erhart gave the Lady Pirates an 8-4 lead, Norfolk State went on a 9-1 run to take a 13-9 lead.
 
Norfolk State later led 15-10 before Hampton went on a 7-2 run, tying the set at 17-17. The Spartans responded by scoring the next six points to take a 23-17 lead.
 
Hampton scored five straight in response, cutting the lead to 23-22.
 
But Norfolk State scored the last two points to clinch the set and take the match.
 
Tyler Clarke led the Spartans with 11 kills.
