WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hampton University volleyball team fell in straight sets Friday night at Burr Gymnasium, as rival Howard won the match
3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-18).
The Lady Pirates fell to 0-17 overall and 0-4 in MEAC play.
Reeana Richardson led Hampton in both kills and digs with eight and seven respectively, along with three blocks, while
Tatyana Thomas hit a team-best .556 with six kills and just one error in nine total attacks.
Lena Washington added five kills and three blocks.
Kennedy Kenney led with four blocks, while
Brianna Lilly had a team-high 12 assists and seven digs.
Howard hit .261 for the match.
The Lady Bison (7-13, 4-1 MEAC) hit a match-best .345 (15 kills, five errors in 29 attacks) in the first set, a frame in which they jumped out to a 12-0 lead. Howard later held a 17-3 lead in the first set, before the Lady Pirates scored five of the next seven points to cut the lead to 19-8 after Washington and Kenney paired on a block.
Howard grew its lead to 23-9 before Hampton went on a 3-1 spurt, cutting the lead to 24-12 on a kill from
Tatyana Thomas, before the Lady Bison took the set on the next point.
Hampton held an early 3-2 lead in the second set, and later cut Howard's lead to 7-6. But the Lady Bison went on a 9-1 run to take a 16-7 lead. A 3-1 spurt cut the lead to 16-10 after a kill from Richardson, and a later kill from
Allysa Medina cut the lead to 19-13.
But Howard ended the set with a 6-2 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 4-2 lead to open the third set after a kill from Richardson, and a kill from Medina later in the set put Hampton up 6-5. But Howard responded with a 6-1 run to take an 11-7 lead.
A 4-2 Hampton spurt cut the lead to 13-11 after a kill from Richardson.
Richardson and
Kyndall Nicholas paired on a block later in the set to cut Howard's lead to 14-12, before the Lady Bison scored three of the next four points to take a 17-13 lead. Washington ended that spurt with a kill, before Howard scored the next two points to go up 19-14.
Thomas cut the lead to 20-16 with a kill, but Howard ended the set on a 5-2 run to clinch the set and the match.
Khalia Donaldson led the Lady Bison with 12 kills.
