HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University football team couldn't overcome a scoreless first half Saturday evening at Armstrong Stadium, as No. 21/24 William and Mary pulled away late for a 42-14 win.
Junior quarterback
Jaylian Williamson (Chesapeake, Va.) had another strong game, throwing for 335 yards and a touchdown. He completed 23 of his 34 passes; after not topping the 200-yard mark last season, Williamson has thrown for at least 300 yards in back-to-back weeks.
Redshirt junior running back
Christopher Dukes (Mobile, Ala.) rushed for 82 yards on six carries and a touchdown – averaging 13.7 yards per carry.
Redshirt sophomore
Twarn Mixson (Charlotte, N.C.) led the way with 123 receiving yards on five catches, while senior running back Jorrian Williamson (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 113 yards and a touchdown on six catches.
The Pirates (0-2) amassed 442 yards of total offense.
But Hampton was held scoreless in the first half, as the Tribe (1-1) utilized a strong running game too score on its first four possessions. The first drive ended in a 33-yard field goal from John Carpenter with 6:30 left in the first half, before the Tribe took a 10-0 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run from Mikal Abdul-Saboor with 39 seconds left in the quarter.
Kendell Anderson added a 2-yard touchdown run with 8:21 left in the half to put the Tribe up 17-0, before Carpenter capped the first half scoring with a 38-yard field goal to cap a 9-play, 36-yard drive to put William and Mary up 20-0.
The Tribe held that lead at the half.
But the Pirates forced the Tribe into a 3-and-out on their first possession of the second half. Hampton took over from there, before being forced to punt – a punt that was blocked to give the Tribe possession two yards from the endzone.
Hampton forced a turnover on the first play, though, with senior defensive back
Marcus Wade (Norfolk, Va.) recovering the fumble. The Pirates then marched 99 yards in seven plays, finding the endzone for the first time when Dukes ran 54 yards for his first touchdown since 2012.
William and Mary went 3-and-out on the following possession, but got the ball back on a muffed punt. Four plays later, the Tribe scored for the first time in the second half, taking a 27-7 lead with 6:20 left in the third quarter.
Hampton's response was almost immediate, as Williamson found Washington for a 50-yard scamper-and-score to cap a 6-play, 79-yard drive, cutting the lead to 27-14 with 4:08 left in the third quarter.
But the Tribe put the game away in the fourth quarter with a pair of lengthy scoring drives; Abdul-Saboor scored on a 1-yard run with 11:57 left in the game, before Anderson scored on a 1-yard run with 5:31 left to give William and Mary a 42-14 lead.
Junior linebacker
Joshua Thorne (Oxon Hill, Md.) led the defense with 10 tackles.
