HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University football team used a solid defense to hold South Carolina State scoreless in the first half on Saturday at Armstrong Stadium, but the Bulldogs emerged late to take a 17-10 win.
The Pirates dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in MEAC play this season.
Senior running back
Jorrian Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) carried the ball 18 times for a career-high 176 yards and a touchdown. Junior wideout
SeQuan Gooding (Chesapeake, Va.) caught four passes for a season-high 69 yards.
Junior quarterback
Jaylian Williamson (Chesapeake, Va.) was 19-for-32 in the air for 182 yards.
The Bulldogs led 10-3 in the fourth quarter, but after a strong kickoff return from junior
Breon Key (Hampton, Va.), Washington ran 57 yards to the endzone to tie the game at 10-10 with 10:00 left.
The Pirates had a chance to take the lead later in the fourth quarter, but a missed field goal gave the ball back to the Bulldogs, who marched 80 yards in 12 plays to take a 17-10 lead with 1:09 left to play after a 1-yard run from Jalen Simmons.
The Pirates drove down the field, but an interception clinched the win for S.C. State.
The Pirates scored on their first drive of the game, marching 83 yards in 14 plays before sophomore placekicker
Anthony Prevost (Chesterfield, Va.) kicked a 29-yard field goal to put Hampton up 3-0.
South Carolina State (3-2, 1-0 MEAC) threatened on the ensuing drive, but Tyler Scandrett missed a 44-yard field goal attempt to give the ball back to the Pirates. The Bulldogs threatened again midway through the second quarter, but TeDarrius Wiley threw an interception to senior defensive back
Marcus Wade (Norfolk, Va.) at the 6:34 mark.
It was Wade's first interception of the season.
The Pirates held a 3-0 at the half.
Hampton drove 47 yards in 12 plays late in the third quarter, before Prevost missed a 32-yard field goal. The Bulldogs answered on the following possession, when Scandrett hit a 35-yard field goal with 1:49 left in the third quarter to tie the game at 3-3.
After a Hampton three-and-out, S.C. State went 80 yards in 12 plays before Adrian Kollock scored on a 1-yard run to put the Bulldogs up 10-3 with 11:13 to play.
The Pirates will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 9, when they head to Greensboro, N.C. to take on North Carolina A&T at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
