PIRATES HITTING THE ROAD TO TAKE ON NCCU

Game Notes

DURHAM, N.C. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will go for its third straight win on Tuesday, hitting the road to take on North Carolina Central at 7 p.m. in the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

Despite both schools being in the MEAC, this will be a non-conference game.

The Pirates (7-7) won their second straight game this past Saturday, using a dominating second half to upend Radford 87-60 at the HU Convocation Center. The Pirates shot 72.0 percent (18-for-25) from the floor in the second half en route to the victory, and they shot a season-best 53.4 percent (31-for-58) for the game.

Sophomore guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) led four Pirates in double figures with 18 points, while senior forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) added 16 points. Junior center Emmanuel Okoroba (Garland, Texas) chipped in 13 points off the bench, and sophomore guard Dwight Meikle (Baltimore, Md.) added 10 points.

NCCU (7-4) has lost its last two games, including a 70-56 defeat at Maryland on Dec. 31. The Eagles were scheduled to play at Wagner on Saturday, but inclement weather forced that game to be canceled. The Eagles, in their fifth season under head coach LeVelle Moton, were picked to finish third in the MEAC this season, and they return two starters from last year's squad.

Senior guard Jeremy Ingram, a Preseason First Team All-MEAC selection, leads the team in scoring with 23.4 points per contest, while senior guard Alfonzo Houston is second in scoring with 11.1 points a night. Junior guard Jordan Parks is the team's top rebounder, pulling down 6.5 boards a game.

Hampton is 0-2 against North Carolina Central, including last season's 68-64 conference defeat at the HU Convocation Center. Both previous meetings were at the Convocation Center; this will be Hampton's first-ever trip to Durham, N.C. to take on NCCU.

Hampton is 210-125 all-time as a Div. I program (since 1995) against teams currently in the MEAC, including an 11-5 mark in the conference last season. Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Pirates have won two regular-season conference titles (2000-01, 2001-02) and four MEAC Tournament crowns (2001, 2002, 2006, 2011).

The Pirates went 7-8 on the road last season, and they closed out the regular season by winning their last six road contests. During Edward Joyner Jr.'s career as a head coach, Hampton is 21-38 overall in true road games away from the Convocation Center after beating Saint Peter's 64-59 on Nov. 12, falling 71-68 at Quinnipiac on Nov. 20, falling 81-67 at Missouri State on Nov. 24, falling 69-40 at Virginia on Nov. 26, and falling 69-67 at Northern Kentucky on Dec. 18.
