WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Hampton University football team struggled to gain any momentum on offense Saturday evening at Walter J. Zable Stadium, as the Pirates fell 31-7 to the College of William & Mary.
The Pirates (0-2) had just 24 rushing yards and 185 yards of total offense.
The Tribe (1-1) struck first with 6:07 left in the first quarter, capping off a 14-play, 63-yard drive with a 29-yard field goal from John Carpenter to take a 3-0 lead. W&M added a touchdown with 43 seconds left in the quarter on a 2-yard scoring run from Kendell Anderson to take a 10-0 lead.
Michael Graham hit Sean Ballard from 41 yards out with 2:07 left in the second quarter to give William & Mary a 17-0 lead – the same lead the Tribe would take into the half.
William & Mary took advantage of field position in the third quarter, capping off a nine-play, 29-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run from Mikal Abdul-Saboor to take a 24-0 lead.
Anderson added a 1-yard score with 10:52 left in the fourth quarter to put the Tribe up 31-0.
The Pirates answered on the ensuing possession, driving 90 yards on 22 plays before sophomore
Jaylian Williamson (Chesapeake, Va.) threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to junior
Jorrian Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) to cut the Tribe's lead to 31-7.
Freshman
Marcus Hampton (Williamstown, N.J.) led the Pirates with 23 yards on the ground, while Williamson was 20-for-36 in the air for 161 yards and a score. Sophomore
Rayshad Riddick (Portsmouth, Va.) caught a team-high seven passes for 49 yards, while Washington caught six passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore
Denzel Heath (Charlotte, N.C.) had a team-high 11 tackles, while senior
Carvin Johnson (New Orleans, La.) added 10 stops.
