HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team found itself playing extra hoops for the second straight game on Monday, but still picked up its fifth straight win, beating Delaware State 85-84 in double overtime at the HU Convocation Center.
The Pirates were down 84-82 in the closing seconds of the second overtime, but senior guard
Wesley Dunning (Washington, D.C.) drained a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to give the Pirates (10-13, 7-3 MEAC) the victory.
Junior guard/forward
Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) led the way with a career-high 29 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Freshman guard
Ke'Ron Brown (Savannah, Ga.) added a career-high 17 points, while sophomore center
Emmanuel Okoroba (Garland, Texas) added 14 points.
Powers gave the Pirates a 56-54 lead with 1:29 left in the second half by hitting a pair of free throws. But Tahj Tate hit a 16-foot jumper with 53 seconds left to tie the game at 56-56. Okoroba nailed a 12-foot jumper with 21 seconds left to put the Pirates back up 58-56.
Delaware State had what appeared to be the final possession, but Maxwell grabbed the steal and slammed home the finisher, his fifth dunk of the night, with nine seconds left to put Hampton up 60-56.
Casey Walker hit two free throws with seven seconds left to cut the lead to 60-58, then Brown hit one of two free throws to give Hampton a 61-58 lead. Walker then drained a 3-pointer with three seconds left to tie the game at 61-61 and force overtime.
Maxwell hit a jumper with 3:36 left in the overtime period to give the Pirates a 65-61 lead. After a Hornets bucket, Maxwell hit two free throws with 2:38 left to give the Pirates a 67-63 lead. Maxwell then hit a layup with 1:52 left and the Pirates took a 69-65 lead.
After Albert Thomas cut the lead in half with a jumper, Okoroba hit a free throw to give Hampton a 70-67 lead with 1:29 left. Thomas then hit a fadeaway jumper with 1:14 left to cut the lead to 70-69, before Brown put the Pirates on top 72-69 with a pair of free throws with 39 seconds left.
Marques Oliver then sank a layup to cut the lead to 72-71, before Maxwell hit a layup of his own with 26 seconds left. Amere May hit a trey from the top of the key with 18 seconds left to tie the game at 74-74, forcing a second overtime.
Brown drove to the hoop with 3:22 left in the second overtime to put the Pirates up 78-76, but May gave Delaware State an 81-78 lead with a 3-pointer with 1:23 left.
May added another trey with 36 seconds left to give Delaware State an 84-80 lead.
The Pirates jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a Powers free throw at the 16:32 mark, but Delaware State fought back to tie the game at 13-13 with 7:38 left in the half after a pair of Thomas free throws. Hampton jumped back in front, but the Hornets tied it at 17-17 with an Oliver jumper with 5:31 left in the half.
Hampton answered with a 9-2 run, taking a 26-19 lead with 3:58 left in the half after junior guard
Ramon Mercado (Hollywood, Fla.) hit a 3-pointer. Delaware State closed the half on a 6-1 run, though, cutting Hampton's lead to 27-25 at the break.
The Hornets scored the first four points of the second half, taking a 29-27 lead at the 17:40 mark on a pair of Cahli Thomas free throws. But the Pirates answered with four straight to take a 31-29 lead on a Mercado jumper with 16:37 left to play.
A layup from senior guard
Aaron Austin (Newport News, Va.) with 14:00 left gave the Pirates a 39-33 lead. Delaware State rallied to cut the lead to 39-37, but Maxwell stopped the run before it got started with a floater to put Hampton up 41-37 with 12:09 left in the second half.
That bucket kicked off a 7-1 Pirates run, as Okoroba converted a 3-point play with 10:06 left in the second half to give the Pirates a 46-38 lead. Maxwell added a layup with 6:08 left to put the Pirates up 50-44.
Delaware State answered with five straight points to cut the lead to 50-49, but Brown hit a pair of free throws with 4:00 left to put the Pirates back up 52-49. The Hornets tied the game at 52-52 with 2:50 left on a Walker 3-pointer, before Tate gave Delaware State a 54-52 lead with 2:28 left on a layup.
Powers tied the game at 54-54 with a pair of free throws with 2:05 left to play.
The Pirates shot 45.2 percent (28-for-62) from the floor, hitting just two of their 12 3-pointers and going 27-for-36 (75.0 percent) from the free throw line.
Delaware State (10-13, 5-4 MEAC) shot 43.9 percent (29-for-66) from the floor, but made just 20 of their 32 free throws (62.5 percent). The Hornets out-rebounded the Pirates 44-37.
Thomas led five Hornets in double figures with 14 points.
