Game Notes

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will look to snap a three-game losing streak on Tuesday, continuing the Corpus Christi Challenge against the University of Virginia at 7 p.m. in the John Paul Jones Arena.

The game will be streamed live on ESPN3.com.

The Pirates (2-3) lost their third straight game on Sunday, falling 81-67 at Missouri State to open the Corpus Christi Challenge. Sophomore guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) led the Pirates with a career-high 29 points on 10-for-15 shooting, while junior forward Emmanuel Okoroba (Garland, Texas) added 12 points and senior forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds.

The Pirates were cold from the floor, going just 24-for-64 (37.5 percent).

The Cavaliers, in their fifth season under head coach Tony Bennett, return three starters and nine letterwinners to a squad that won 23 games and made it to the quarterfinals of the NIT last season. Virginia was tied for fourth in the ACC with a mark of 11-7.

Virginia (4-1) was picked to finish fourth in the ACC this season, and senior guard Joe Harris was named to the Preseason All-ACC squad. The Cavaliers won their third straight game on Saturday, beating Liberty 75-53 at home thanks to 13 points from redshirt-sophomore forward Anthony Gill and another 12 points from redshirt-sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon.

Brogdon is the team's leading scorer so far this season, averaging 12.2 points a contest, while junior forward Darion Atkins is pulling down a team-best 6.6 rebounds a game.

Hampton is 0-6 all-time against Virginia, with five of those six meetings coming in Charlottesville, Va. The two teams last met in the 2009-10 season, where the Cavaliers won 80-54. Virginia's lone trip to Hampton came in the 1999-2000 season, when Hampton lost 102-56. Each of the last four meetings were in Charlottesville, Va.

Hampton is 1-15 against teams currently in the Atlantic Coast Conference since joining the Div. I ranks in 1995. That lone win came at North Carolina in the 2001-02 season, when the Pirates beat the Tar Heels 77-69.

The Pirates are 0-1 against Clemson; 0-1 against Duke; 0-3 against Maryland; 1-2 against North Carolina; 0-1 against N.C. State; 0-6 against Virginia; and 0-1 against Wake Forest. The Pirates have never faced Boston College, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, Notre Dame, Pitt, Syracuse, or Virginia Tech.

The Pirates went 7-8 on the road last season, and they closed out the regular season by winning their last six road contests. During Edward Joyner Jr.'s career as a head coach, Hampton is 21-36 overall in true road games away from the Convocation Center after beating Saint Peter's 64-59 on Nov. 12, falling 71-68 at Quinnipiac this past Wednesday, and falling 81-67 at Missouri State this past Sunday.
