PIRATES RETURN HOME TO FACE JAMES MADISON

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will return to the HU Convocation Center on Monday to take on the Dukes of James Madison at 7 p.m.

The Pirates (2-10), in their fourth season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., fell 68-49 at USC Upstate on Wednesday, despite 17 points and 10 rebounds from junior guard/forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) and eight points from junior guard Ramon Mercado (Hollywood, Fla.).

The Dukes (7-7) had their four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday by a 68-52 loss at Georgia State, despite 19 points and 16 rebounds from redshirt-senior forward Rayshawn Goins, as well as 10 points and eight rebounds from redshirt-senior guard A.J. Davis.

The Dukes went 12-20 overall last season, while going 5-13 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). James Madison has six seniors on its roster this season, its fifth under head coach Matt Brady, and the Dukes were picked to finish sixth in the CAA.

Goins leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.8 points and 7.9 boards per contest. Redshirt-senior guard Devon Moore is averaging 10.7 points a game, while redshirt-senior forward Andrey Semenov is pouring in 10.0 points per contest.

The Dukes are averaging 67.1 points a game on offense, while giving up 69.0 points a night.

Since moving up to Div. I in 1995, the Pirates are 0-3 all-time against James Madison, including a 74-67 loss in Harrisonburg, Va. last season. Prior to last season, the two teams had not met since the 1996-97 season, when the Dukes beat Hampton 59-58 in Harrisonburg, Va. on Dec. 18, 1996. JMU beat Hampton 88-86 on a neutral court in the teams' first meeting on Dec. 8, 1995.

Hampton is 13-27 all-time against teams currently in the CAA – including 1-1 mark last season, when the Pirates defeated William & Mary 73-58 and fell to Delaware 68-64 in the ESPN BracketBusters game. Hampton is 1-4 against Delaware; 2-0 against Georgia State; 1-4 against George Mason; 0-2 against James Madison; 0-1 against North Carolina Wilmington; 2-4 against Old Dominion; 1-2 against Towson; and 6-10 against William & Mary.

For his career as a head coach, Joyner is 22-15 at home, and the Pirates were 6-5 at home last season – beating William & Mary, High Point, Howard, South Carolina State, Morgan State and Maryland Eastern Shore, while losing to Savannah State, Norfolk State, Coppin State, Delaware State, and North Carolina Central.

Hampton defeated Howard 58-50 in its 2012-13 home debut, before falling 66-54 to Robert Morris on Dec. 8, beating American 72-65 on Dec. 18, and falling 54-52 to Northern Kentucky on Dec. 20 for a 2-2 home mark.
