NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team lost its first match of the season Wednesday evening, falling
3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 18-25, 25-16) to Norfolk State in Echols Hall.
The Lady Pirates (2-1) jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first set, but Norfolk State rallied to take that set before going on to take the second as well thanks to a 9-2 run. Hampton won the third set thanks to a 12-6 closing run, but the Lady Spartans took the fourth set for the match.
Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Lady Pirates with nine kills on the night and 10.5 points, while
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, had eight kills in 31 total attacks.
Adriana Vazquez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) added six kills herself, while
Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) and
Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) each contributed five kills. Cordoba also had a team-high two service aces and 10.0 points.
Mika Chow (Rocky Mountain Home, Alberta) had 13 of Hampton's 13 assists, while
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) recorded six assists.
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) had a team-high 11 digs on defense. Vazquez added seven digs and Wynne chipped in six.
Aurelia Isham and Elayne Greer led Norfolk State with seven kills each, while Isham had seven service aces. The Lady Spartans had 17 service aces and 10 total blocks.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. for the James Madison Invitational. Hampton will face St. Francis (Pa.) at 5 p.m., before taking on James Madison and Duquesne on Saturday.
