LADY PIRATES WIN TWO IN NCCU TOURNEY

The Hampton University volleyball team took two out of three games over the weekend in the North Carolina Central Volleyball Tournament, beating North Carolina A&T on Friday and topping Winston-Salem State on Saturday.

The Lady Pirates beat North Carolina A&T 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13) in their first match of the tournament, thanks to 40 kills on 117 team attacks. The Lady Aggies had a team hitting percentage of just .016, while the Lady Pirates hit .111 over the five sets.

Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) led Hampton with 11 kills in 26 attacks, while Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) has nine kills and a team-best .190 hitting percentage. Wynne also had a team-high three service aces, while Lihi Elkayam and Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) each had two service aces.

Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 24 of Hampton's 34 assists, while Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) led the team with 15 digs on defense.

Tiffany Mellette and Janae Mitchell each had 11 kills for North Carolina A&T.

Hampton then lost to tournament host North Carolina Central 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 26-24) to close out Friday's action. Both teams had 41 team kills, though NCCU had two fewer errors (26) than the Lady Pirates.

Wynne had 13 kills to lead the Lady Pirates (5-11), while Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) added 10. Lina Cordoba, with seven kills in 14 attacks, led the Lady Pirates with a .375 hitting percentage. Wynne also had four service aces.

Elkayam had 30 of Hampton's 33 assists, and Suput had 14 digs on defense. Armstrong and Harrison each added 10 digs.

Belin Behncke-Biney led NCCU with 13 kills.

Hampton beat Winston-Salem State 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16) on Saturday. Three of the Lady Pirates' five wins this season have come against the Lady Rams; Hampton beat WSSU 3-0 on Aug. 28, and again 3-2 on Sept. 19.

Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) led the Lady Pirates with 13 kills in 23 attacks, for a team-best .435 hitting percentage, while Harrison added 11 kills in 23 attacks. Armstrong led the team with four service aces.

Elkayam had all 44 of Hampton's assists, while Suput had 15 digs on defense. Armstrong added 12 digs, while Elkayam added 11.

Ashley Harris led WSSU with 13 kills, while Annika Barnwell added 11 and Georgette Allen had 10.
