GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Hampton University men's and women's basketball teams will take on North Carolina A&T on Monday, with the women's game tipping off at 6 p.m. The Pirates, looking to avoid their second straight loss, will tip off around 8 p.m.
The Lady Pirates (13-13, 9-5 MEAC) are coming off a 73-48 win over Norfolk State on Saturday. Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) led Hampton with 17 points in the win, while Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) poured in 12. Senior Chinyere Ukoh (Woodbridge, Va.) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds as the Lady Pirates picked up their sixth win in the last seven games.
North Carolina A&T (21-6, 13-1 MEAC) beat the Lady Pirates at the Convocation Center on Feb. 2, 75-69. The Lady Aggies clinched the MEAC regular-season title and the tournament's top seed on Saturday with an 80-64 win over Howard, their third straight victory.
Brittany-Taylor James leads all Lady Aggie scorers with 18.7 points a game, while Amber Bland is pouring in 16.4 points a contest. Ta'Wuana Cook is also averaging in double figures on the season, contributing 11.3 points a game. Lamona Smalley leads the Lady Aggies in rebounding, pulling down 6.8 boards a contest.
The Pirates (13-15, 6-8 MEAC) is coming off a 90-68 loss to Norfolk State on Saturday, marking the first time since the 2005-06 season that Hampton has lost the season series to the Spartans. Hampton has lost seven of its last 11 games, and will look to avoid back-to-back losses.
Vincent Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa.) leads the team in scoring at 11.7 points a game, while he also averages 14.2 points a contest in MEAC play. Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the Pirates with 14 points Saturday against Norfolk State.
Since beating Hampton on Feb. 2, the Aggies (16-13, 9-5 MEAC) have won eight straight games, including a 69-59 decision over Howard on Saturday. Four Aggies are averaging double figures in scoring this season, led by Ed Jones' 12.9 points a contest. Alston is second on the team with 11.5 points a contest, while Nicholas Wilson is pouring in 10.6 a game and Robert Johnson is adding 10.1 points a night. Thomas Coleman leads the Aggies in rebounding, pulling down 5.9 boards a night.
