LADY PIRATES EDGE HOWARD IN FIVE SETS

Aaryn Harrison was one of two Lady Pirates to record a double-double in Friday's five-set win over Howard.

The Hampton University volleyball team edged past Howard Friday night in five sets, emerging with a 3-2 (14-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-13, 17-15) win at Burr Gymnasium.

The Lady Pirates recorded 63 kills and 26 errors in 157 attacks for a team hitting percentage of .236, while letting Howard hit .192 (51 kills, 23 errors, 146 attacks). The Lady Pirates hit .483 as a team in the fourth set, recording 17 kills and just three errors in 29 attacks, while hitting 17 kills in 40 chances in the third set for a .300 hitting percentage.

Hampton also hit .250 in the fifth set and .242 in the second set, rebounding from a slow first set, which Howard took 25-14.

Hampton also held a 7-6 edge in service aces, and a 9.5-7 advantage in total team blocks.

Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) was one of two Lady Pirates to record a double-double, leading the team with 14 kills and adding 11 digs on defense. Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) recorded her seventh double-double of the season, compiling 13 kills and 14 digs. Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) also had 13 kills for the Lady Pirates, hitting a team-best .417.

Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) added 12 digs, while also recording two service aces. Adriana Vazquez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) also had two service aces to go along with 10 digs.

Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 46 of Hampton's 50 assists, while Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) led the Lady Pirates on defense with 18 of the team's 67 digs.

Gazelle d'Artois led Howard with 21 kills, while also recording 10 digs for a double-double.

With the win, the Lady Pirates (9-17, 4-5 MEAC) jumped into a tie for third place in the MEAC Northern Division with Howard; Hampton holds the tiebreaker advantage by virtue of sweeping the season series with the Bison (8-25, 4-5 MEAC). Howard will close its regular season on Sunday against Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The top four teams in the MEAC North will qualify for the 2009 MEAC Championships, which will be held Nov. 21-23 in Baltimore, Md.
