WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team lost a close game on Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena, as William & Mary escaped with a 62-61 win after
Darrion Pellum's 3-point attempt with two seconds to go missed.
The Tribe led by as much as seven in the second half when David Schneider hit a 3-pointer with 7:39 left to play to put William & Mary up 55-48. A free throw from Marcus Kitts with 14:02 to play gave the Tribe their first lead of the second half, 41-40. A pair of free throws from
Mike Tuitt (Bronx, N.Y.) with 44 seconds left cut the Tribe's lead to one point, and
Charles Funches (Bayonne, N.J.) followed that with a pivotal block with 10 seconds to play.
Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the Pirates (0-4) with 21 points to tie his career high, going 7-for-11 from the floor and 5-for-8 from behind the arc. Senior
Vincent Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa.) went 6-for-9 from the field to score 13 points on the night, while Funches added 11 on 5-for-6 shooting.
Milade Lola-Charles (Laurel, Md.) led the Pirates with five rebounds.
Schneider led the Tribe with 16 points on the night, while Danny Sumner added 15 points. Quinn McDowell added 11 points on 3-for-6 shooting. Schneider also had a team-high eight rebounds.
Hampton shot 48.9 percent (23-for-47) from the floor and 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from 3-point range. William & Mary countered with a 47.6 shooting percentage (20-for-42) and going 12-for-27 (44.4 percent) from 3-point range.
The Tribe (3-2) out-rebounded Hampton 31-22, but the Pirates only turned the ball over 10 times while forcing the Tribe into 15 turnovers.
The Pirates took an 11-8 lead with 15:27 left in the first half on a 3-pointer from Simpson, but William & Mary took a 14-13 lead just over three minutes later, when Schneider hit a trey of his own. The Tribe led throughout much of the first half, leading by as much as 13 when John Mark Ludwick hit a 3-pointer with 7:42 left in the first half to put William & Mary up 26-13.
The Pirates responded with a 17-3 run to take a 30-29 lead with 2:39 left in the first half on a 3-pointer from Pellum. The run eventually grew to 20-6, as Hampton held a 33-32 lead at the half, shooting 56 percent (13-for-23) from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
