HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team will close out the 2009 regular season on Wednesday evening, welcoming Norfolk State to the Holland Hall gymnasium for a 6 p.m. match.
The season finale was re-scheduled from Wednesday, Nov. 11, due to inclement weather.
The Lady Pirates (9-18, 4-6 MEAC) are coming off a
3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 25-19) loss to Morgan State on Nov. 8 to close out conference play. Norfolk State is 8-21 overall and 3-5 in MEAC play following back-to-back three-set losses to Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M.
Norfolk State defeated Hampton
3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 18-25, 25-16) when the two teams last met on Sept. 2 at Echols Hall.
Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Lady Pirates with nine kills in that match, while Aaryn Harrison added eight kills. Aurelia Isham and Elayne Greer each had seven kills for Norfolk State.
Wynne leads the Lady Pirates with an average of 2.34 kills per set on the season, with
Harrison (Cary, N.C.) leading in total kills with 204. Mianna Armstrong, who has compiled eight double-doubles on the season, leads the Lady Pirates with an average of 2.86 kills per set during conference play.
Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) leads all Lady Pirates with at least 50 sets played with a .257 hitting percentage; in 34 sets,
Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) has a .322 hitting percentage (57 kills, 19 errors, 118 attacks). Harrison leads the team with 27 service aces on the season.
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) leads Hampton, and sits sixth in the MEAC, with 660 assists on the season – an average of 7.76 per set.
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) is second in the conference with 372 digs on defense, an average of 2.57 per set.
The Lady Pirates are third in the MEAC in opponents' hitting percentage, only allowing teams a .176 hitting percentage on the season. Hampton is also fifth in the conference in service aces, recording 162 as a team in 96 sets.
Hampton ended conference play in a three-way tie for third with Howard and Morgan State in the MEAC Northern Division; the top four teams in each division qualify for the MEAC Championships. Morgan State won the tiebreaker to take the No. 3 seed in the MEAC North, and Howard took the No. 4 seed to officially eliminate the Lady Pirates from the tournament.
The 2009 MEAC Championships will be held Nov. 20-22 in Baltimore, Md.
