Box Score
Columbia, S.C. – Amanda Black pitched 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball and Brittany Davis went 2-for-3 including an inside-the-park home run, to lift the Lady Pirates of Hampton University to 7-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman at the MEAC Roundup at Pine Grove Sports Complex.
Black retired the first 11 batters she faced before surrendering a walk in the fourth inning that ended her bid for a perfect game. However, the no-hitter remained intact as the Wildcats (18-27, 5-4 MEAC) came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Breanna Shaw went down on strikes and Holly Bussey grounded out to second base, but Christina Trimble hit a slow rolling single in between third base and shortstop to give Bethune-Cookman its only hit of the day. Black finished with six strikeouts to improve to 13-4.
Offensively the Lady Pirates (23-8, 8-0 MEAC) again jumped in front in the first inning with three early hits off of Bethune-Cookman starter Andrea Thomas. Tesara Liggins led off with a single, was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on Maggie Wolfe’s single that bounced off the third base bag. Jennifer Gonzales fouled off seven pitches in her 10-pitch at bat before hitting a blast to left field that got caught in a gusting wind before dropping in for an RBI double.
Two errors by Wildcats third baseman Christina Trimble helped the Lady Pirates add two more runs in the second, the second coming on another double to right field by Davis that was just out of the reach of diving Bethune-Cookman center fielder Ariel Robinson.
Hampton increased its lead to 5-0 courtesy of an RBI single by Angela Basler in the third and an inside the park home run to left field by Davis in the top of the fourth.
Thomas held the Lady Pirates in check in the fifth and sixth, but Hampton added two more runs in its final plate appearance on a pair of RBI singles by Jada Jeffries and Ashley Weissenbach.
