John McNabb, Ph.D.

Dr. John McNabb is entering his second season as head coach of the Hampton University women’s soccer program, bringing decades of experience coaching and playing the sport to help usher the program from the intramural level into the NCAA Div. I level.
 
The program’s first season as a varsity team was in 2015, when the Lady Pirates played the first 10 matches in their history. Hampton scored four goals in those 10 matches, including the first-ever goal in program history in the opener against Canisius.
 
Sydney Jackson scored that goal. She added another tally against Saint Peter’s to become Hampton’s first-ever multiple goal scorer. The Lady Pirates scored twice in the match at Saint Peter’s, marking the first time in program history that Hampton scored more than one goal in a match.
 
He has worked at Hampton University as a research assistant professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, and McNabb has also played for Hampton International as part of the Virginia Rush Peninsula Adult League.
 
His professional experience includes a stint at Penn State, where he was a post-doctorate research fellow, and Carnegie Mellon, where from 1997-2002 he was a graduate research assistant. In addition, Dr. McNabb has authored or co-authored roughly 70 peer-reviewed papers.
 
Dr. McNabb also spent 10 months in 2006 working at the Science and Technology Corporation in Hampton, Va.
 
Having played for Hampton International since 2008, Dr. McNabb has been on several league championship teams, most recently in the fall of 2014. His specialty has been on the defensive side of the ball, including his high school career at Williamsville High.
 
While at Penn State in 2005, Dr. McNabb played intramural soccer.
 
Dr. McNabb has obtained licenses from the United States Soccer Federation and Virginia Youth Soccer Association to coach U6-U8, U8-U10, and Under-12 squads. He has also served as club coach at Hampton since the spring of 2013.
 
Dr. McNabb holds both a Doctorate and a Master’s in physics from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa., and he received his Bachelor’s degree in physics, mathematics, and history from Washington and Jefferson in Pennsylvania in 1995.
 
He was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta, and Sigma Pi Sigma.
