Zach McCarthy joined the Pirate coaching staff in 2026 as part of Head Coach Van Malone’s initial coaching staff. McCarthy came to Hampton after spending two years as linebackers coach at Central Missouri.
 
While with the Mules, five Central Missouri players from the defensive side were honored by the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2025. The All-MIAA honorees include: Garett Hormann (linebacker), Mike Harris (defensive line), Malachi Howard (defensive back), Cameron Done (defensive line) and Darius Hampton (defensive line).
 
Prior to his stint at Central Missouri, McCarthy served as a defensive graduate assistant at North Texas from 2023-24.
 
McCarthy spent six years at his alma mater, Texas State. After working as a student equipment manager, he was promoted to student assistant coach in 2017. In 2018, McCarthy was named volunteer quality control coach. For three seasons, he was a defensive graduate assistant at Texas State. In his final season, he was promoted to senior defensive analyst.

He graduated from Texas State with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 2017 and earned a master's degree in education from Texas State in 2021. He met his wife, Suzi, while the two were students at Texas State.
