
Spartans Top Pirates in Four Sets

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 30, 2026) … The Hampton University volleyball team dropped a four set match with local rival Norfolk State Wednesday night inside of the Convocation Center 18-25, 19-25, 25-20, 18-25.Â
The Pirates jumped out to an early 7-1 lead to start the first set, as Racquel Frazier and Nikola Jaroszewicz each recorded two kills early. Norfolk State responded to the hot Pirates start with a 6-1 run to bring the game within one at 8-7. Olivia Bryant gave Hampton a 10-7 lead when she ripped her first kill of the set, before the two sides traded points with Hampton leading 12-9. The Spartans took control of the match when they scored seven straight points to take a commanding 16-12 lead. Norfolk State used that momentum to take the first set 25-18.Â
Norfolk State used a 7-3 run to start the second set before back-to-back kills from Jaroszewicz and Frazier settled the Pirates in with kills. After a 3-0 run, capped by a Belen Ferrufino service ace, Hampton held the lead at 9-8. The two sides then exchanged points before the Spartans took a 15-11 into the media timeout courtesy of a 3-0 run. They extended that lead and eventually took set two 25-19.Â
Hampton responded in the third set when they jumped out to a 9-5 lead led by senior Katerina Pappa's four early kills. After the Spartans battled back, and took a 14-13 lead, it was Hampton rattling off a 5-0 run to take the 18-14 lead late. They used that momentum and closed the third set out with a 25-20 win.Â
In the fourth set the two sides exchanged points early as the two were knotted at 13. The Spartans rattled off a 3-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. Hampton responded scoring three of the next four points to make it a one score match at 17-16. The Spartans ripped off a 8-2 run to take set four 25-18 to defeat Hampton 3-1.Â
Frazier led the Pirates with 20 kills on the night while Pappa added 18 of her own. Frazier recorded five service aces, ranking fifth all-time in Hampton history for service aces in a four set match. Maria Clara Andrade registered 15 digs to lead the defense with Frazier adding 12.Â
Hampton returns to action Friday, Oct. 9 when they travel to Charleston. The match is set for 6:00 p.m. followed by a match Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
