
Pirates Begin 2026 Campaign 1-0 With 3-0 Win Over Bethune-Cookman

GREENVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 28, 2026) … Katerina Pappa led Hampton in kills with 14, as three Pirates registered 10 or more in a rout of Bethune-Cookman Friday afternoon 3-0 (25-19,25-14,25-15) in the first day of the East Carolina Tournament.
In the first set, the two sides battled early with Hampton holding an early 7-5 lead courtesy of kills from Nikola Jaroszewics and Pappa. The two then traded points before Hampton took a commanding 18-13 lead, rattling off a 7-2 run, forcing Bethune-Cookman into a timeout. Hampton then held off the Wildcats over the course of the final seven points, as Jaroszewicz buried one home to help the Pirates clinch set one 25-19.
The Pirates continued their momentum in the second set, jumping out to an early 7-3 lead, forcing the Wildcats into their first timeout of the set. Racquel Frazier recorded back-to-back service aces to help build the lead, followed by multiple Wildcat errors. After the timeout, the duo of Jaroszewicz and Pappa continued to dominate, depositing multiple kills to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Hampton continued to extend its lead throughout the course of the set, as Janiah Robinson and Jaroszewicz recorded a block assist, followed by a kill from Pappa to hold a 17-8 lead. The Pirates closed the set out with an 8-6 run, capped off by a Robinson kill to give Hampton a 2-0 lead.
Pappa took matters into her own hands in the third set. Hampton trailed 10-7 early before Pappa buried home three kills to spark an 8-2 run to help the Pirates hold a 15-12 lead at the media timeout. The Pirates closed the set out on a 10-3 run, capped by a Frazier kill to give Hampton their first win of the season.
Hampton's 3-0 win is the first sweep for the Pirates since the 2022 season when they beat Manhattan 3-0. It is also the first time the Pirates have won their season opener since the 2022 season when they defeated UMES.
Pappa led the Pirates with 14 kills, while Frazier and Jaroszewicz each added 11. Dila Derendeli set a career-high with 13 digs defensively, while Robinson added two blocks. Ana Luiza Caminha Matos dished out 30 assists in her first match as a Pirate.
