Former Pirate Football Standout David “DT” Turner Passes Away

HAMPTON, Va. (July 20, 2026) … Former Hampton University football standout David 'DT' Turner passed away on July 16, 2026.
Turner was a legendary player at IC Norcom High in Portsmouth, Va. He was a two-time All-State selection and was named MVP of the VHSL East-West All-Star game after his senior season. Following his sterling prep career, he spent one year at Butler Community College (Kan.) before playing his final three seasons at Hampton.
As a member of the Pirates, he helped lead the team to a 24-11 record. Turner finished with 168 total tackles under Coach Joe Taylor and was a teammate of current Hampton director of athletics Anthony D. Henderson Sr.
Turner was part of two NCAA Playoff teams and was a member of the 1997 Black College National Championship team while at Hampton.
