Cougars Topple Pirates In Sunday Matinee

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 11, 2026) … A balanced College of Charleston squad with four in double figures paced by Tyja Beans with 24 points held off a pesky Hampton squad 88-75 in CAA Women's Basketball on Sunday afternoon.

A Sophia Tougas triple gave the Cougars a 9-4 lead with 6:51 on the clock. Kayla Lezama made a layup and Olivia Smith drained a three-ball to bring Hampton (7-8, 1-2) to 11-9 just 80 seconds later.

College of Charleston (12-3, 4-0) responded scoring eight straight points as a Leah Philpotts triple pushed their advantage to 19-9 at the 3:13 mark.

Lezama scored 11 of her career-high 29 points in that opening quarter as the Pirates trailed 26-16 after one.

The Cougars opened the second quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 38-18 lead on a Tougas three-pointer with 5:22 remaining in the half. Hampton whittled that down to 41-28 as a pair of Kiki McElrath free throws with 2:59 left capped a 10-3 flurry.

Hampton closed the third quarter on a 12-4 burst to trail 70-53 following a Taylor Gibson 3-pointer with 20 seconds left off a Lezama assist.

The Cougars advantage grew to 19 points in the fourth as Beans scored a layup with 6:04 left. Hampton forced the Cougars into seven turnovers in the final 10 minutes, but were doomed by a 7-for-8 shooting performance from the guests.

A Lezama pull up jumper with 4:38 left pulled the Pirates to 79-68, but that was as close as the deficit got as Beans scored the next five points with a three-ball capping the spurt for an 84-68 lead at the 3:05 mark.

Lezama paced Hampton with a career-best 29 points and tied her career-high with four assists. Le'Asia Foreman joined her in double figures with 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Smith and McElrath just missed double digits with nine points each.

On the game, Hampton was 29-of-56 from the floor (51.8%) marking the highest field-goal percentage in a game under head coach Tamisha Augustin.

The Cougars had Philpotts with 13 points off the bench, Taryn Barbot with 12 and Tougas with 11 to join Beans in double figures. Taylor Barbot just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 assists.

Hampton is on the road next weekend visiting William & Mary on Friday night at 7 p.m. then heading to Greensboro, North Carolina to face N.C. A&T on January 18 at 2 p.m.
