Memphis Nine Run Inning Lifts Tigers Past the Pirates 18-9

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Feb. 9, 2025) … Hampton University softball team ended the 901 Classic with an 18-9 loss to the Tigers.  The inclement weather put the game on hold for nearly two hours. Coach Tarvin's side jumped out to a 6-3 lead after two innings. Memphis's bats caught fire during the next three frames producing 15 runs. The Tigers 19 hits propelled Memphis to win the contest in five innings.

Carmynn Bonner began the game with a leadoff infield single. The Pirates quickly had baserunners on first and second. Sophomore infielder Kylie Hill drove in a run with a base hit up the middle. Hampton before the end of the stanza tallied two more hits leading to a 4-0 lead. Memphis was quick to respond in the bottom half of the frame. After back-to-back base hits, the Tigers produced a three-run blast shrinking HU's early advantage down to one. The Pirates we able to get off the inning on a pop-up to third. 

During the top of the second Hill brought in another run with a single down the right-field line. The Chesapeake, Va. native, went 3-for-4 from the plate against the Tigers and tallied three RBIs. While Jada Evans struck out during the next at-bat she reached first on a wild pitch. The wild pitch allowed another run to come across the plate increasing HU's lead to three.

While the Pirates kept Memphis quiet in the bottom of the second, the Tigers bats caught fire next three frames. Memphis took its first lead of the afternoon 7-6 after four runs came across the plate in the third inning.  Hampton once again took control once more with Evans's single up the middle. The Tigers would respond in the bottom half of the frame by producing nine runs. While the Pirates brought in two more runs, Memphis homered to center field ending the game in five innings. 

The Pirates return to action at the HBCU Collegiate Invitational. Hampton's first opponent will be Jackson State at noon on Friday, Feb. 14.
