Women's Indoor Track and Field Captures 2025 CAA Championship

First CAA Championship for Hampton University

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (February 27, 2025) … The Hampton University women's indoor track and field team put together a day for the record books on Thursday, capturing the first Coastal Athletic Association title in school history by winning the 2025 Indoor Track and Field title at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.

Hampton put together two first-place finishes and five second-place finishes on Thursday to help total 110 points and edge out Elon with 107.5 points. Defending champion Northeastern took third with 94.5 points out of 12 teams.

"I am so excited for my women's team. Today was a day of pure heart and desire. Our ladies fought hard and were determined to bring the trophy back to campus. This is what happens when we believe in each other," said Hampton University Head Coach Maurice Pierce.

"I'd like to thank President Darrell K. Williams, AD Henderson, my staff and everyone at Hampton who continues to support us," he added.

It all came down to the 4x400 relay as Hampton entered that event trailing Elon 104.5 to 102 in the team standings. The Pirates were sitting fourth heading into the final leg of the relay, and Brianna Charles came through with a blistering 53.28 anchor leg to help push Hampton to second in 3:43.29 to lock up the team crown. Joining her on that 4x400 team were Arriah Gilmer, Morgan Pruitt, and Carmen PenaSoto.

"Our 4x400 anchor leg, Brianna Charles, ran with an attitude and was determined to keep our relay team in the top two to take the title," Pierce said.

Peninah Mutisya finished off the 3,000/5,000-meter double by winning the 3,000-meters on Thursday with a meet record of 9:16.47. This follows her meet record in the 5,000 meters on Wednesday.

Charles had a busy day as she took second in the 60-meter dash, running 7.44 and in the 200 meters in 23.63. Jordan Mozie took second in the 800 meters in 2:09.70, while Rochele Solmon took second in the shot put with a toss of 15.30 meters (50-2.5).

The 4x800 meter relay team of Mekayla Wilson, Kayla Spencer, Kylee King, and Mozie took first running 9:02.14.
