Hampton’s Five-Game Winning Streak Comes to an End Falling to Charleston 94-67

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Jan. 2, 2024) … Hampton's five-game winning streak came to an end against Charleston inside TD Arena. The Pirates fell to the Cougars 94-67. Hampton had an uncharacteristic night from the free throw line going 13-for-22 from the charity stripe. The Cougars made 12 threes while shooting 48 percent from beyond the arc.

Charleston began the contest on a 9-2 run taking advantage of early turnovers made the Pirates. Coach Ivan Thomas's squad started to chip away at the Cougar's lead with production off the bench. Daniel Johnson and George Beale Jr. both connected from beyond the arc to make it 15-11. Beale Jr. produced nine points for the Pirates going 2-for-4 from three in the first half.

However, Charleston manufactured another strong stretch to take their first double-digit advantage off the night. Hampton continued to battle and brought it back to within one possession. The Pirates were able to force turnovers and continued to hit shots from three. HU would shoot a first-half season-high 50 percent going 6-for-12 from deep.

The Cougars' 7-0 run made it a nine-point contest 34-27 with less than six minutes to go. Hampton would start to receive production from its starting five. Xzaiver Long helped the Pirates close out the first frame strong with nine points and three rebounds. The junior was one point shy of tying his season-high.  Heading into the half, Hampton trailed Charleston 42-35.

Charleston opened the final 20 minutes with back-to-back threes. Noah Farrakhan drew a foul to help stop the Cougars offensive push. The 84 percent free throw shooter would go 2-for-3 from the charity stripe. The Pirates had an uncharacteristic night from the free-throw line shooting 59.1 percent.

The Cougars went on a 25-6 run to take the lead 73-43. Down the stretch for the Pirates Johnson continued to provide a spark off the bench. The Chicago, Ill native, finished the night with a career-high 22 points while going 8-for-13 from the field. The CAA Rookie of the Week for the first time in his collegiate career scored 20 or more points. Beale Jr. would be the only other Pirates in double figures with 14 points.

Hampton continues its first conference road trip on Saturday, Jan. 4 against Elon. The Pirates matchup against the Phoenix at Schar Center is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's contest will be streamed on FloSports.
