Hampton Women's Soccer Face Campbell in First CAA Away Match of the Season

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 20, 2024) … The Lady Pirates hit the road taking on the Camels of Campbell this Sunday afternoon at Eakes Athletics Complex. Hampton's first away conference match is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Campbell leads the series all time 4-0 against the Lady Pirates. Prior to joining the Coastal Athletic Association, Hampton had faced CU two times. Sunday's match against the Camels marks the fifth all-time meeting between the two programs. Campbell won the most recent matchup at Powhatan Field 6-0.

Last time out, the Lady Pirates fell to William & Mary on Sept. 19, 3-0 in the conference opener. While Hampton allowed an early goal in the 12th minute, the defense stood strong not allowing another goal in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Kaitly Howell made her seventh start of the season. In the first 45 minutes, Howell tailed three saves. The Pellham N.Y. native finished the match with six saves. The Tribe in the second half found the back of the net two more times.

So far this season the Lady Pirates have scored second-most goals (17) in the CAA. While Sanaa Perry leads Hampton in goals scored with four, it has been a group effort for Coach Vorwold's side. HU has had 11 different student-athletes find the back of the net. Nylah Jennings, Ece Lea Evin, and Aileen Perez all have produced a team-high two assists this season. Jennings in her freshman season has also scored twice.

Jeff Gross is in his third season at the helm in Buies Creek, leading the Camels to a 3-3-3 record. Campbell opened conference play this past Thursday, Sept. 19, against UNCW. Cu was able to score before the end of the first half. During the 70th minute, Abby Connolly found the back of the net to make it 2-0. The Camels would be outshot 15-5 but were tied (4-4) with the Seahawks for shots on goal.

Kaleigh Backlund leads Campbell in scoring this season with four goals. While the senior forward has only taken seven shouts, five have been on goal. Sophomore Alyssa Tucker is another offensive threat for the Camels. The Raleigh, N.C. native, has two goals and a team-high four assists.
