Lady Pirates Fall on Senior Day, 2-1 to Drexel

NORFOLK, Va. (Oct. 20, 2024) … Hampton University women's soccer team fell to the Drexel Dragons 2-1 at Powhatan Field. Before the match began the program honored seniors Zaria Ascue and Angelina Woodard, Drexel got on the board twice in the first half but the Lady Pirates scored early in the final 45 minutes. While Hampton had chances late to score the equalizer, the Lady Pirates ran out of time.

Coach Scot Vorwold's side produced the match's first shot in the third minute. Ellen Van Caenegem's chance just missed the left side of the goal. In the opening moments, Hampton's defense did not allow a single shot. The Lady Pirates would commit a foul inside its own penalty box giving Drexel a penalty kick. The Dragons converted the opportunity making it 1-0.

Throughout the half, Hampton continued to produce shots. Sophomore Madisyn Strange tallied two chances in the first half. The Newport News, Va. native, finished the match with a team-high four shots. During the 42nd minute, the Dragons doubled its advantage with a goal by Jess Castorina.

Early on in the second half, the Lady Pirates offense started to find its rhythm. Mattie Edozie was able to cut the Dragon's advantage down to one. With Edozie putting pressure on Drexel's goalkeeper, the sophomore was able to force an errant pass and find the back of the net.

Coach Vorwold's side outshot Drexel in the final 45 minutes 8-6. In the final 10 minutes of the match, Hampton produced three straight chances to tie the contest. Edozie had another chance to score with a one-on-one with the Dragon's goalkeeper. However, her shot was off the mark. Both Evan-Nicole Whitaker and Zaria Ascue created chances for the Lady Pirates but Drexel's defense withstood the attack.

Hampton concludes the 2024 season on the road at Monmouth on Sunday, Oct. 27. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports.
