Hampton Women’s Soccer Begins CAA Play Against Charleston

Hampton, Va. (Sept. 5th, 2023) … The Lady Pirates being conference play Thursday night against the College of Charleston.  Hampton's match with the Cougars will mark the end of HU's six-game road trip. Fans can follow the action by viewing the match on FloFC.

A Look at Your Lady Pirates

Through the non-conference portion of the 2023 season, the Lady Pirates have been one the most physical teams in the CAA.  Hampton has committed the most fouls in the conference leading to a total of nine yellow cards this season. While HU struggled to produce shots early on this season, they started to climb the conference standings for shots per game. In two of their last three matches, Hampton has had ten or more shots.

Offensively for the Lady Pirates, freshman Sanaa Perry and sophomore Makayla Wade have led the way. With her two goals this season Perry ranks tied for sixth in the CAA for Goals. While Wade has not scored since the match against Saint Peter's, she continues to be one of HU's best free-kick takers. Entering conference play Alexis Deveaux still sits atop the CAA for total saves. With her 49 saves this season, Deveaux currently ranks third in all of Division I for saves.

Scouting Charleston

The Cougars heading into Thursday night's match are still looking for their first win of the season. Charleston started off the season with a draw in their first match of the season to South Carolina Upstate. However, the opponents they have faced this season have a combined loss total of five. The Cougars are coached by Christian Michener who enters his 14th season under the helm. Michener throughout his tenure has helped 27 student-athletes gain all-conference honors.

Through the non-conference portion of their schedule, Charleston's offense sits toward the bottom of the conference. The Cougar's offensive production has been a group effort with four different players finding the back of the net. One of coach Michener's top goal scorers from last season Olivia Freitas still sits scoreless through five matches. Freitas currently leads the Cougars in shot attempts and shots on goal. As a unit, Charleston has allowed 11 goals which is the second most in the conference.
