Hampton Rolls Past Mary Baldwin 100-53, with Jerry Deng’s 37-Point Performance

HAMPTON, Va. (Dec 11, 2023) … Hampton University men's basketball team picked up their fourth win of the season defeating Mary Baldwin 100-53. The Pirate's bench would lead the way producing over 60% of HU's scoring. Jerry Deng once again had a stellar performance scoring a career-high 37 points. Deng did most of his damage from inside the arc but went 4-6 from three.

While Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad got on the board first, they found themselves trailing early. Mary Baldwin began the contest on fire from deep making three out of their first four attempts. The Fighting Squirrels led by eight before the first media timeout. However, The Pirates offense would start to fire on all cylinders.

With Jerry Deng providing a spark off the bench, Hampton started to take control of the contest. In the first half alone Deng produced 15 points going 5-6 from the field. The Norcross, Ga. native, hit back-to-back threes to give the Pirates a 26-23 advantage. From the 10:25 mark on Coach Joyner Jr.'s squad would have the lead. Kyrese Mullen throughout the remainder of the first half, helped HU extend its lead to 15. Mullen ended the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds tallying his fifth double-double of the season.

Coming out of the half Hampton started to find their rhythm from beyond the arc shooting 36 percent from three. Along with Deng, Tedrick Wilcox Jr. provided the Pirates with an offensive spark. The Pawtucket, R.I. native, shot an improved 5-8 from the field in the second half. With Wilcox Jr. scoring 13 points in the final 20 minutes, he secured his first double-double of the season.

The Pirates in the final half of the contest would shoot 54.8 percent from the field. Hampton was able to manufacture high-quality looks with superb passing from Jordan Nesbitt. Nesbitt in his first game back with HU had six points, eight rebounds, and a game-high six assists. With the Pirates closing out the contest on a 15-3 run Hampton built their largest lead of the night.

Ja'Von Benson would be HU's fourth player to finish the contest in double-figures. The Columbia, S.C. native, had a career-high 14 points. Benson was also three rebounds shy of the first double-double in his career.

Hampton returns to action Saturday inside the Convocation Center at 2:00 PM hosting James Madison.
