Pirates Return to the Convocation Center Hosting UMBC

HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 26, 2023) … After two weeks of contests on the road, Hampton University men's basketball team returns home to the Convocation Center. The Pirates continue their non-conference slate against UMBC. Heading into Monday night's matchup the Retrievers are on a two-game losing streak
A Look at Your Pirates
Hampton is coming off a 71-52 loss to the Spartans of San Jose State. The Pirates would have an off shooting night going 4-20 from beyond the arc. While shots were not falling for HU, Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad found themselves leading at the half. With Hampton shooting 32% from the field in the second half, the Spartans pulled away late. However, Joshua Lusane had his best offensive performance this season. Lusane shot an efficient 6-7 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds.
So far this season the Pirates have been one of the better teams in the Coastal Athletic Association at getting out in transition. On average Hampton is producing 14.5 fastbreak points which is third in the CAA. HU has been able to get out in transition by forcing 7.3 steals per game. The Pirates have also proven to have a deep bench. With Hampton running a ten-man rotation, they are averaging 25 bench points per contest

A Look at the Retrievers
UMBC enters Monday's contest with a (3-4) overall record. The Retrievers started out the season with consecutive losses. After the slow start, they would go on a three-game winning streak. UMBC is coached by Jim Ferry who enters his third season as head coach. Under Ferry, the Retrievers have had back-to-back 18-win seasons. In his first season with the program, they made it to the America East Championship Game.
So far this season UMBC have been one of the better offensive team in their conference averaging 80.6 points per game. While Coach Ferry's squad is scoring at an efficient rate, they give up a conference-high 81.6 points per contest. The Retriever's leading scorer this season has been Khydarius Smith. Smith through seven games is averaging 15.3 points per game.
