THIRD QUARTER START LEADS LADY PIRATES OVER WINTHROP

HAMPTON, Va. -- Sophomore Nylah Young scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half as Hampton opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run to rally and defeat Winthrop 51-42 on Friday night.

After trailing 20-18 at half, Hampton started the second half scoring the first 10 and 12 of the first 14 points to take a 30-22 lead on a Young jumper with 6:59 remaining in the quarter. That advantage grew to 40-27 with 2:42 left as Tia Montagne drained a 3-pointer.

In the fourth, Winthrop trimmed the lead to 47-38 after a J'Mani Ingram layup at the 4:36 mark. A pair of Young layups over the next three minutes took the lead back to 13 at 51-38 with just 71 seconds left.

Winthrop (2-10, 1-8) started the game quickly as Madison Ervin drained a pair of 3-pointers to put them ahead 6-2 with 7:34 on the clock. The Eagles held the advantage through the opening quarter leading 13-9 after one. Hampton scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take its first lead as Montagne drilled a 3-pointer for a 16-13 advantage with 5:37 left in the half. Winthrop regained the lead and took a 20-18 lead into halftime on a Myra Strickland 3-pointer with 47 seconds left.

Jermany Mapp added 13 points, while Montagne chipped in with 12 for Hampton (3-6, 3-4). Dlayla Chakolis was the leading rebounder with 11, while Victoria Davis had five points and seven assists.

The same two teams will tangle on Saturday at 3pm to close out this Big South series.
