DALLAS, Texas (Nov. 5, 2026) … Hampton was able to erase one 10-0 run, but a second one to start the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as SMU held off several comebacks by the Pirates in a 66-54 decision on Thursday morning at Moody Coliseum in front of 3,356 on Kids Day.
The host Mustangs opened the game with the first 12 points as Hampton got on the board with Kennedy Hall finding Justus Fitzgerald with a layup with 2:15 on the clock for Hampton's first points to snap their 0-for-9 start.
A pair of Kiki McElrath free throws and a steal and layup from Aaryn Battle put the Pirates down 12-6. Shania James drained a triple just before the first quarter horn to give SMU (2-0) a 15-6 lead after one.
SMU opened scoring seven of the first 10 points of the second quarter to lead 22-9 before Hampton (0-2) answered with a 9-2 burst as Battle drained a triple from the top of the key to pull to 24-18 with 5:08 on the clock.
McElrath hit another pair of free throws to keep the deficit at six trailing 30-24 with 33 seconds remaining. The Mustangs closed out the quarter with a pair of Adja Kane free throws and a Zahra King jumper to push back to double digits 34-24 at halftime.
The Pirates made yet another run in the third quarter getting to a one-possession game at 43-40 following a Battle assist for a driving McElrath layup to force a Mustang timeout with 2:10 remaining in the third. The deficit shrunk to one as Amiyah Donaldson grabbed a rebound and found a wide open McElrath for a layup to trail 45-44 after three.
SMU hit the Pirates with another 10-0 run to start the fourth pushing the lead to 11 on a Shania James jumper with 7:16 left at 55-44. Hampton cut the lead to five on three occasions, the last being a McElrath pullup jumper with 2:37 remaining at 59-54.
Battle and McElrath had 19 points apiece, while Maya Woodson had a season-high 10 rebounds with Battle just behind her with eight. As a team, Hampton was 15-of-15 from the foul line to tie a school record for free throw percentage in a game. That's the third best perfect performance in school history only trailing a 21-for-21 against Presbyterian on Feb. 5, 2019 and a 22-for-22 against Longwood on Feb. 15, 2020.
Hampton hits the home hardwood next week for two games starting with the Apprentice School on Monday night at 7 p.m.
