LEXINGTON, Va. – In a match that saw a two-hour delay at halftime due to lightning which made for a shift of fields to finish under the lights, a goal by
Ayana Garvin off a feed from Savyon Hammond at 74:29 as Hampton scored a 1-0 win at VMI on a rainy Thursday night.
The win gave Hampton its first season opening win in program history, its first road shutout and road win over a Division I program.
In the opening 45 minutes played at Patchin Field, the Keydets outshot Hampton 6-4 as the hosts controlled tempo for most of the half.
A round of thunderstorms hit Lexington at halftime and forced a move to a field with lights on campus to continue two hours later.  That break seemed to refocus the Lady Pirates who attacked the second half with a physical style of play. "The girls played hard today and were very focused and committed in the midst of some weather delays," said first-year head coach
Momoh Kanneh. "We started five freshmen and after the two-hour delay at half they all came out hard and physical."
The first break in the scoreless match came just under 16 minutes left as Hammond gathered a loose ball in front of the net and found Garvin who blasted the first goal of the match. Hampton had to withstand a flurry at the end but kept the Keydets from scoring.
Senior
Maya Andrews recorded six saves in net for Hampton who was outshot 14-8 in the game.
The Lady Pirates now venture north to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Canisius at 2 pm Sunday.
