Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

LACROSSE RALLIES FOR FIRST VARSITY WIN 7-5 OVER PRIDE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's lacrosse team won its first varsity game in the two-year history of the program rallying from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Greensboro College 7-5 at a chilly Armstrong Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In its second year as a varsity program, the Pirates were 0-5 in the 2016 season and are now 1-2 after Saturday's win.  Kier Johnson had two goals, while John Tarver had a goal and two assists to help lead Hampton.

Greensboro jumped on the board almost two minutes into the game as Daniel Wolf blistered the back of the net with a blast for a 1-0 Pride lead with 13:20 left in the opening period.  That was the lone tally by either team in the opening stanza.

The Pride scored twice in the span of 38 seconds late in the second period as Davis Miller took a feed from Victor Mehrtens at the 2:21 mark and then tallied an unassisted goal with 1:43 left to put Greensboro up 3-0.

Hampton finally got one past Pride goalkeeper Chris DiBiasi with 8.1 seconds left in the half as Leo Jackson, III broke the scoring drought for the Pirates.
In the third period, Hampton started to get untracked and put up two goals in a 45 second span.  Andrew Gray got an unassisted tally at the 11:27 mark and Johnson took a pass from Tarver and put Hampton even at 3-all with 10:42 left in the third.

Greensboro bounced back to take a lead 19 seconds later as Wolf caught a pass from Miller and rattled the back of the cage to lead 4-3.

The Pirates scored the last two goals of the third period as Jacob Woodard took a pass from Tarver to tie the game with 6:47 left in the third.  Another late tally closed the third for Hampton as Kier Johnson caught a pass by Jonathan Napier and gave Hampton a 5-4 advantage with six seconds left in the period.

In the final period, Hampton took its largest lead of the game at 6-4 as Woodard connected with Tarver for the goal at the 13:15 mark.  Greensboro cut the deficit in half on a Johnathan Avedesian unassisted tally with 8:15 left.   The insurance goal, was by senior Darrel Kidd who put Hampton up 7-5 with 4:24 left as the Pirates were able to keep the Pride at bay and clinch the historic win.

In a nearly even statistical game, Hampton outshot Greensboro 31-28 as Joshua Tarver recorded 15 saves in net for Hampton.  Each team scored a goal with the extra-man advantage and won eight faceoffs apiece.

The Pirates are now off until Friday when they visit Staten Island, NY to face Wagner in a 1pm match.
