WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Despite three players scoring in double figures, the Hampton University men's basketball team opened a nine-game road swing with an 86-67 loss to William & Mary on Wednesday evening in Kaplan Arena.
The Pirates fell to 2-2 on the season.
Guards Reginald Johnson Jr. and
Lawrence Cooks each had 14 points to lead the Pirates, with Johnson hitting three 3-pointers. Cooks added a team-high four assists.

Brian Darden added 12 points.
Forward
Dionte Adams grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to lead Hampton on the glass.
The Pirates struggled from the floor, shooting 33.3 percent (23-for-69) from the floor, hitting just seven of 26 3-pointers (26.9 percent). Hampton also went 14-for-24 (58.3 percent) from the free throw line.
A 16-5 run for the Tribe opened the game, but a jumper from
Trevond Barnes at the 12:35 mark cut the lead to 18-14. William & Mary then went on a 16-6 run, taking a 34-20 lead at the 4:51 mark after a layup from Terry Tarpey.
Tarpey added a pair of free throws with 55 seconds left in the half, sending the Tribe into the intermission with a 40-25 lead.
William & Mary shot 54.6 percent (12-for-22) in the second half, opening the frame on an 11-6 run to take a 51-31 lead after a trey from Tarpey with 15:38 left in the contest. Omar Prewitt converted a 3-point play with 14:19 remaining to put the Tribe up 55-33.
Daniel Dixon gave the Tribe its biggest lead of the game with 7:04 left to play, hitting a 3-pointer to give William & Mary a 68-41 lead.
After Prewitt gave the Tribe a 75-53 lead, Hampton went on an 8-0 run, cutting the lead to 75-61 after a 3-pointer from Johnson.
Another trey from Darden with 3:02 to play cut the lead to 77-64.
The Tribe (4-1) shot 47.4 percent (27-for-57) from the floor and hit 10 of 22 3-pointers. William & Mary also held a 45-40 edge on the glass, while also racking up 13 blocks.
Dixon and Prewitt led four players in double figures with 22 points each.
