HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will put its nine-game winning streak on the line Monday evening, as the Lady Pirates play host to Maryland Eastern Shore at 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
The Lady Pirates (19-4, 10-0 MEAC) are one win shy of their fifth straight 20-win season after defeating Howard 76-64 on Saturday. Junior guard
Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) led the way with 24 points (20 in the second half), while senior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) added 14 points.
Senior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) and freshman guard
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) each scored 13 points, and Bennett grabbed 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season.
Bennett is 33 points why of 1,000 for her career.
The Lady Hawks (5-15, 1-7 MEAC) were picked to finish ninth in the MEAC this season, and UMES lost its 12th game in 14 tries with an 80-64 loss to Coppin State on Saturday. Junior guard Jessica Long leads UMES in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game, and junior guard Shawnee Sweeney is averaging 10.2 points per night.
The Lady Pirates are 33-6 all-time against Maryland Eastern Shore, and the Lady Pirates have won the last nine meetings (including a 78-47 win in Princess Anne, Md. last season). UMES last beat Hampton on Feb. 4, 2006 (the last of three straight wins in the series for the Lady Hawks), and the Lady Pirates are 15-1 all-time against the Lady Hawks at home.
Hampton is 304-138 against teams currently in the MEAC — including a 33-6 mark against UMES — and the Lady Pirates have won six MEAC regular-season titles to go along with seven tournament titles, including each of the last four.
Overall, the Lady Pirates have won their last 40 games against MEAC foes, including conference tournament games.
The Lady Pirates were a perfect 11-0 at home last season, and in their four-plus years under head coach
David Six, they are 46-7 in the HU Convocation Center. Hampton had not lost at home since Jan. 28, 2012, falling to Coppin State in overtime, prior to a loss to American back on Dec. 4.
Hampton is 9-1 at home this season after defeating Howard 76-64 on Saturday, and the Lady Pirates have won their last 16 home MEAC games.
