SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will hit the road on Saturday, kicking off a string of four straight road contests when the Lady Pirates take on Savannah State at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
The Lady Pirates (14-4, 5-0 MEAC) have won four straight after Monday's 99-45 dismantling of Morgan State – a contest in which freshman guard
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.), the two-time reigning MEAC Player of the Week, led the way with 22 points.
Junior guard
Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) added 20 points, while senior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 18 points on 8-for-9 shooting and senior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds.
Hamilton is 27 points shy of 1,000 for her career.
The Lady Tigers (11-8, 4-1 MEAC) were picked to finish 12th in the MEAC this season, and Savannah State has won three straight games (and six of its last seven) after Monday's 80-68 win over Florida A&M. Senior guard Ezinne Kalu leads the Lady Tigers with 16.2 points per game, and freshman center Tiyonda Davis is pulling down a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game.
The Lady Pirates are 2-0 against Savannah State, including a 70-40 win in Tiger Arena last season. The first meeting was two seasons ago, which Hampton won 59-40 at the HU Convocation Center. Hampton's average margin of victory in the series in 24.5 points per game.
Hampton is 300-138 against teams currently in the MEAC — including a 2-0 mark against Savannah State — and the Lady Pirates have won six MEAC regular-season titles to go along with seven tournament titles, including each of the last four. Overall, the Lady Pirates have won their last 35 games against MEAC foes, including conference tournament games.
The Lady Pirates were 13-2 on the road last season, with their only road defeats being at Duke in the NCAA Tournament and at Virginia Tech. Under head coach
David Six, the Lady Pirates are 46-18 in road games over the past four-plus seasons. So far this season, the Lady Pirates are 3-3 in true road games after a 79-39 win at Delaware State on Jan. 11.
Hampton last lost on the road to a MEAC foe in the 2010-11 season, when Bethune-Cookman beat the Lady Pirates 55-51. Hampton has won its last 21 road conference games.
