SOFTBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER AT CAMPBELL

BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
The Hampton University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Campbell on Wednesday at the Eakes Athletic Complex, falling 11-2 in five innings in the first game before dropping the second game 8-0 in six innings.

The Lady Pirates (4-11) have lost nine straight games.

Campbell struck first in the bottom of the third inning in the first game, pushing across three runs to take a 3-0 lead, before the Lady Pirates answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning.

After junior Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) led off the inning with a double down the left-field line, freshman Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) belted her first home run of the season to left field to cut Campbell's lead to 3-2.

Campbell answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning, pushing them across on the strength of six hits, before adding another two runs in the fifth inning to push the game to its final 11-2 margin.

In all, Campbell scored 11 runs on nine hits. The Lady Pirates scored their two runs on three hits.

Freshman Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out four batters in 3.2 innings of work.

Campbell scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, before adding three more runs in the bottom of the second inning.

The Lady Pirates threatened in the top of the third inning after back-to-back singles from freshman Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.) and senior Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.), but Hampton couldn't push a run across.

Campbell added a pair of runs in the fourth inning after a two-run double from Sarah Forgacs, before putting the game away in the bottom of the sixth with another run.

Senior Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) struck out three in 5.1 innings of work.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when they travel to Conway, S.C. to compete in the Coastal Carolina Tournament. Hampton will take on North Carolina A&T or La Salle in its first game on Friday at 11 a.m.
