DURHAM, N.C. – The Hampton University football team will look for its second straight win on Thursday, as the Pirates will take on North Carolina Central at 7:30 p.m. at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

The Pirates (1-4, 1-2 MEAC) picked up their first win of the season this past Saturday, winning the Battle of the Bay 28-14 over rival Norfolk State, while the Eagles (4-2, 3-0 MEAC) have won three straight games after beating Morgan State 24-20 on Saturday and are tied for the MEAC lead with Bethune-Cookman.
Senior running back
Jeremiah Schwartz (Orlando, Fla.) was key in Hampton's win this past Saturday, rushing for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. It was his third 100-yard rushing game of the season, and Schwartz is currently second in the MEAC in rushing, averaging 95.4 yards per game.
Sophomore quarterback
Travis Champion (Moreno Valley, Calif.) is third in the MEAC with 196.2 passing yards per game, third in the MEAC in total offense with 197.6 yards per game, and he is also eighth in the conference in pass efficiency at 112.4.
Senior linebacker
Lyndell Gibson (Virginia Beach, Va.) who had two interceptions and eight tackles in Saturday's win, is currently fifth in the MEAC in tackles, averaging 9.6 per game, while junior defensive back
Carvin Johnson (New Orleans, La.) is eighth with 8.2 tackles per game and junior linebacker
Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) is tied for 10th with 8.0 tackles per game.
Gibson is also second in the MEAC in passes defended (1.2) and tied for sixth in interceptions (0.4).
Johnson leads the MEAC in fumbles recovered, with 0.4 per game.
The Pirates are 17-5 all-time against North Carolina Central, and the Pirates have won the last eight meetings – including a 30-27 overtime win at Armstrong Stadium last season. The Eagles last defeated the Pirates back in 1983, when they took a 24-20 win in Durham, N.C. to cap off a five-game winning streak in the series. Prior to that five-game span, the Pirates had won nine straight against NCCU dating back to 1924.
The Pirates are 3-2 all-time against North Carolina Central on the road.
The Pirates are 192-161-6 all-time against schools currently competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) after going 5-3 in the conference last season. Hampton is 9-9 against Bethune-Cookman; 23-13 against Delaware State; 8-13 against Florida A&M; 47-40-1 against Howard; 24-35-2 against Morgan State; 24-25-1 against Norfolk State; 25-15-2 against North Carolina A&T; 17-5 against MEAC newcomer North Carolina Central; 4-0 against MEAC newcomer Savannah State; and 11-6 against South Carolina State.
This is only the Pirates' 17th year as a member of the MEAC, as they initially became a member back in 1995. Since joining the MEAC, the Pirates have won the conference championship five times, including three straight in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
The Pirates went 1-3 on the road last season, with their lone win coming at Savannah State on Oct. 29. Hampton also lost road contests last season at Old Dominion, at Bethune-Cookman, and at Norfolk State.
During
Donovan Rose's tenure as head coach, Hampton is 7-11 on the road, and they are 0-2 this season away from Armstrong Stadium after their season-opening 41-31 loss at Tennessee Tech on Aug. 30 and a 44-20 loss at Florida A&M on Sept. 15.
