SOFTBALL LOSES TWO OF THREE AT DELAWARE STATE

DOVER, Del. –
The Hampton University softball team lost two of its three games over the weekend against Delaware State at the Hornets Nest, splitting Saturday's doubleheader and losing Sunday's contest.

The Lady Pirates (13-32, 6-6 MEAC) won Saturday's first game 7-1 before losing the back end of the doubleheader by the same score. Delaware State won Sunday's game 12-1 in five innings.

Hampton jumped out to a big lead in Saturday's first game thanks to six runs in the top of the second inning. After the Lady Pirates loaded the bases with no one out, junior Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.)doubled down the left field line to bring in a pair of runs to get Hampton on the board.

Junior Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) later walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run, before sophomore Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) singled to right field to bring in another run.

Senior Bre'Anna Brown (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored on an error and Magett scored on a passed ball to close out the inning.

Ferguson scored an unearned run in the fourth inning to put Hampton up 7-0. The Lady Hornets got on the board in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Ferguson led the Lady Pirates at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Boykin drove in a team-high two runs in Saturday's first game. Senior Tiffany Brents (Chino Hills, Calif.) went the distance, striking out four and spreading out six hits to pick up her sixth win of the season. 

Delaware State struck first in Saturday's second game, scoring a run in the first before adding three more in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead after Rachel Carroll drove in a pair of runs with a single and later scored on a groundout.

A passed ball and an RBI single by Jordan Reid in the fourth inning put the Lady Hornets up 6-0, before Hampton got on the board in the sixth inning after junior Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) doubled a run home.

A wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth gave Delaware State its last run.

Ferguson and Magett each had two hits for the Lady Pirates.

Delaware State jumped to a 4-0 lead after three innings on Sunday, before sophomore Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) brought in Hampton's run with a fly ball in the top of the fourth inning.

The Lady Hornets pushed eight runs across in the bottom of the fourth, putting the game out of reach.

Ferguson, Estep and sophomore Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.) each had a hit on Sunday.

The Lady Pirates will close out the regular season on Friday and Saturday, when they travel to Baltimore, Md. for the three-game set against Coppin State.
