LADY PIRATES EXTEND WIN STREAK TO NINE

The Hampton University women's basketball team ran its winning streak to nine games on Saturday, as the Lady Pirates defeated Delaware State 77-64 at Memorial Hall.

Junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) led the Lady Pirates with 16 points, while sophomore forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) added 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 13 points and a team-high 10 assists for her fourth double-double of the season.

Senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) added eight points and seven rebounds.

Hampton opened the game on a 13-1 run, culminating in a 3-pointer from McMillian with 14:17 left in the first half. Delaware State then scored five unanswered points, before the Lady Pirates went on an 14-4 run – taking a 28-10 lead at the 9:00 mark on a trey from Avant.

The Lady Pirates led by as many as 27, 49-22, in the first half after an Avant free throw with 34 seconds left. Hampton held a 49-24 lead at the half.

Delaware State opened the second half on an 18-11 run to cut Hampton's lead to 60-44 at the 11:03 mark on Washington jumper. The Lady Pirates answered with a 9-2 run to go up 69-46 with 6:23 left to play on an Avant layup.

The Lady Hornets could never get closer than within 13, after Kianna Conner drained a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to push the game to its final margin.

The Lady Pirates (21-6, 14-1 MEAC) shot 41.1 percent (23-for-56) from the floor, while also hitting 27 of 38 free throws. Hampton also out-rebounded Delaware State 37-31, and the Lady Pirates forced Delaware State into 19 turnovers.

Hampton scored 31 points off those turnovers.

Delaware State (9-18, 5-10 MEAC) shot 40.4 percent (19-for-47) from the floor. Washington and Conner each scored a team-high 13 points, while Kianna D'Oliveira added 10 points.

Washington also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Lady Pirates will close out the regular season on Thursday, when they head to Washington, D.C. to take on Howard at 6 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium.
