LADY PIRATES FALL AT MORGAN STATE IN STRAIGHT SETS

BALTIMORE, Md. –
The Hampton University volleyball team suffered its second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) loss on Wednesday, as Morgan State took a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) win at Hill Field House.

The Lady Pirates fell to 9-10 overall on the season and 4-2 in MEAC play, while Morgan State improved to 4-17 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Morgan State took the first set, despite committing eight service errors. The first set saw nine ties and four lead changes; Hampton first took an 8-7 lead, then later when up 14-12. The Lady Pirates went up 15-13, before Morgan State jumped out to a 19-16 lead.

Freshman Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) brought Hampton back to within 19-17 with a kill, and she added another to cut the Lady Bears' lead to 20-18. But Morgan State would score the last four points of the set to win 25-19.

Junior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) and sophomore Ioana Kalfinova (Sofia, Bulgaria) teamed on a block to tie the second set at 5-5, before taking a 7-5 lead on a Kalfinova service ace. Morgan State later went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-9 lead.

Sophomore Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.) recorded her first kill later in the set to pull Hampton within 14-12. Baylor recorded a kill to give Hampton a 16-15 lead later in the set, but the Lady Bears answered with four straight points.

A pair of Kraskura kills weren't enough, as Morgan State took the second set 25-20.

Junior Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) recorded a kill to cut Morgan State's lead to 5-3 in the third set, but the Lady Bears held control of the set throughout.

Hampton hit .129 for the match, recording 27 kills and 15 errors in 93 attacks. The Lady Pirates hit a team-best .312 (14 kills, four errors in 32 attacks) in the third set.

Morgan State hit .337 for the match, thanks to 45 kills and 11 errors in 101 total attacks. The Lady Bears hit a team-best .438 (16 kills, two errors in 32 attacks). Morgan State also held a 5-3 edge in service aces.

Kraskura led Hampton with nine kills, hitting .273 for the match. Parros added seven kills, committing just one error to hit .667 for the night. Cadavid recorded six kills, hitting .308 with just two errors in 13 attacks.

Senior Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 25 assists, while sophomore Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) pulled in a team-high 12 digs on defense.

Erin Cox led Morgan State with 11 kills, while Kierra Outlin added 10 kills. Both players hit better than .400 for the match.
