LADY PIRATES PICK UP FIRST WIN OF SEASON

ORANGEBURG, S.C. –
The Hampton University volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2010 season on Saturday in its final match of the South Carolina State SpikeFest.

The Lady Pirates (1-14) beat North Carolina Central 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 26-24) behind the strength of 32 team kills in 84 total attacks – a .131 hitting percentage. Hampton hit a team-best .231 in the second set, thanks to 12 kills and just six errors in 26 total attacks.

NCCU had seven service aces to Hampton's six.

Senior Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) led the Lady Pirates with 10 kills in that match, while junior Lina Cordoba (Bogota, Columbia) hit .385 thanks to seven kills and two errors in 13 attacks. Sophomore Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) added six kills and a team-high three service aces.

Junior Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) led the team with 24 assists, while senior Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) had a team-high 11 digs on defense.

Belinda Behncke-Biney led NCCU with 10 kills, while Emmanuelle Santos had eight.

Despite playing in just three of the four matches, freshman Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) was named to the All-Tournament Team. She had 21 kills and 16 digs on defense in her three matches played.

Hampton opened competition on Friday against The Citadel. The Citadel defeated the Lady Pirates 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-16), hitting .296 as a team thanks to 51 kills and 16 errors in 118 total attacks. Harrison led the way with 17 kills, hitting a team-best .256, while Pagan added 10 kills.

Chavez led the way with three service aces and 28 assists. Junior Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel), who did not play on Saturday in observance of Yom Kippur, had 11 assists against The Citadel. Suput had a team-high 12 digs on defense, while Pagan added 10.

Tatum Jestila led The Citadel with 14 kills, while also recording 10 digs on defense.

Tournament host South Carolina State swept Hampton 3-0 (25-20, 25-9, 28-26) on Friday, despite eight kills from Cadavid and seven from Harrison. The Lady Bulldogs hit .265 as a team with 46 kills and 20 errors in 98 total attacks, and they held an 8-4 advantage in service aces.

Chavez had 17 of Hampton's 21 assists, and Harrison had a team-high nine digs.

Peri Ligons led SCSU with 12 kills, while Elizabeth Webb added 10.

Mercer defeated the Lady Pirates 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 25-15) to open up Saturday's action, hitting .296 as a team thanks to 48 kills and just 16 errors in 108 total chances. Mercer hit .500 as a team in the fourth set (16 kills, three errors, 26 attacks) and .417 in the first set (11 kills, one error, 24 attacks).

Mercer also led Hampton 9-5 in service aces.

Pagan had a team-high nine kills for the Lady Pirates, while Harrison added eight. Pagan only committed three errors in 26 chances, recording a team-best .231 hitting percentage.

Chavez led the way with two service aces, while also recording all 29 of Hampton's assists, and Suput recorded a team-high 15 digs on defense.

Jamie Duffy led Mercer with 14 kills. Charlotte Harris had four service aces.

The Lady Pirates will return to action Friday and Saturday, when they head to Durham, N.C. for the North Carolina Central Tournament – where they will face Maryland Eastern Shore, South Carolina State, East Tennessee State and North Carolina Central.
