LADY PIRATES DROP HOME OPENER TO RICHMOND

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team lost its home opener on Tuesday night, as the University of Richmond beat the Lady Pirates 71-43 at the HU Convocation Center.

Richmond held the Lady Pirates (1-3) to just four second-half field goals in taking their third straight win in the series. The Spiders opened the second half on an 18-4 run, accentuated by a layup from Kara Powell with 9:48 to play that put Richmond up 61-36.

After junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) opened the second half with a jumper at the 19:23 mark, she sank a layup with 9:01 to play – Hampton's first field goal since that jumper.

Junior center Sherena Abercrumbia (Dallas, Texas) added a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 7:23 to play, and senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) hit a jumper at the 4:16 mark, but the Spiders (3-1) held the Lady Pirates in check.

Perry led the Lady Pirates with 13 points, while junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) and Warner each scored nine. Warner also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. Hampton shot 27.1 percent (16-for-59) from the floor on the night, including just 4-for-27 in the second half.

Hampton out-rebounded Richmond 42-38, including 21 offensive boards.

The Spiders shot 46.7 percent (28-for-60) from the floor, while also hitting six of their 16 3-point attempts. Brittani Shells led Richmond with 15 points, while Abby Oliver added 12. Crystal Goring added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Richmond took a 43-32 lead into the half, thanks to a team shooting percentage of 58.6 (17-for-29) and 17 points off 11 Hampton turnovers. The Spiders were also 4-for-6 from behind the arc, and they used a 19-8 run midway through the first half to go up 40-24 with 3:55 left in the period after Becca Wann drained a 3-pointer.

McMillian and Perry each had nine points in the first half to lead the Lady Pirates, who shot 37.5 percent (12-for-32) from the floor and made just two of their eight 3-point attempts.

Hampton did out-rebound Richmond 22-12 in the first half.

Shells led Richmond with nine points at the half.
