WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hampton University volleyball team split a pair of matches over this past weekend on the road, falling to Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday before beating Howard in five sets on Sunday.
In the process, senior
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) became just the fourth player in Lady Pirates history to reach 1,000 career kills. She recorded a combined 21 kills over the weekend and now has 1,003 for her career.
UMES defeated Hampton
3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-21) on Friday at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center, surviving an early scare from the Lady Pirates. Hampton held a 20-11 lead in the first set, before the Lady Hawks closed on an 11-1 run to take the set.
The Lady Pirates (6-18, 2-2 MEAC) hit .208 as a team, thanks to 30 kills and just 14 errors in 77 total attacks. The team hit .346 (13 kills, four errors in 26 attacks) in the third set, to go along with a .250 hitting percentage (10 kills, four errors in 24 attacks) in the first set.
UMES, which also held a 9-3 edge in service aces, hit .284 (42 kills, 15 errors in 95 attacks) as a team.
Harrison led the Lady Pirates with 10 kills, while freshman
Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) added six kills and hit .231 with just three errors in 13 attacks.
Junior
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 18 of Hampton's 26 assists, while senior
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) led the way with 11 digs on defense. Junior
Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) added eight digs for the Lady Pirates.
Maline Vaitai led UMES with 15 kills, while Zoe Bowens added 13 and Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa recorded nine kills and had a team-best .615 hitting percentage. Bowens also had a team-high four service aces as UMES won its eighth straight match.
Hampton edged Howard
3-2 (25-20, 25-15, 21-25, 19-25, 15-8) on Sunday in Burr Gymnasium, thanks to a team hitting percentage of .123 (45 kills, 28 errors in 138 attacks). The Lady Pirates, who held a 7-4 edge in service aces, hit .350 in the second set thanks to 10 kills and three errors in 20 attacks.
Hampton also hit .250 in the final set, recording seven kills and three errors in 16 attacks.
Harrison led the way with 11 kills as she reached her milestone, while Armstrong added 10 kills and seven digs on defense. Pagan added nine kills, while junior
Lina Cordoba (Bogota, Colombia) added seven kills and hit .250 (four errors in 12 attacks).
Armstrong had a team-high three service aces.
Junior
Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) had 25 of Hampton's 39 assists, while Suput led the way with 18 digs on defense. Pagan added nine digs on defense, while Chavez and sophomore
Virginia Chell (Emerald Park, Saskatchewan) also had six digs.
Tosin Elebute led Howard with 13 kills, while Taylor Johnson and Gazelle d'Artois each added nine.
