HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will look to get back into the win column on Monday, taking on Morgan State University at 4:30 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
The Lady Pirates have lost two of their last four games following Saturday's 58-52 home loss to Coppin State, despite 20 points from senior
Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va.). Morgan State picked up its second conference win of the season on Saturday by beating Howard 57-48 for its second straight win.
The Lady Pirates are 18-11 all-time against Morgan State, after the Lady Bears swept both meetings last season. Morgan State beat Hampton 77-55 in Baltimore on Jan. 26, 2009, before coming the HU Convocation Center on Feb. 23 and taking away a 90-87 overtime win on ESPNU. Morgan State has won the last three meetings in the series and seven of the last nine. The series began on Nov. 23, 1979, when the Lady Bears walked away with a 64-40 home win. Hampton won seven straight meetings between 2001 and 2005; Morgan State has never won more than three straight games against the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Bears went 17-13 last season, finishing fifth in the MEAC with a 9-7 record and falling in the MEAC Tournament 70-59 to Maryland-Eastern Shore. Senior guard Corin Adams was named First Team All-MEAC, an honor she followed up with a Preseason First Team nod coming into this season. Senior center Kristina Rosario was named Preseason Second Team All-MEAC, as the Lady Bears were picked to finish fifth in the conference.
Adams leads the team and is second in the MEAC in scoring with an average of 18.7 per contest; she'd led the team in scoring in 10 of the Lady Bears' 13 games so far this season. Junior forward Theresa Davis is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 5.7 boards per game. Davis has led the team in rebounding five times this season.
The Lady Bears are averaging 61.5 points a game on offense as a team, while giving up 61.2 points a night on defense. Opponents are out-rebounding Morgan State by an average of 44.8-39.5 per game.
Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Lady Pirates are 212-133 against schools in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Hampton has a winning record over every school in the conference except for Howard and Coppin State; the Lady Pirates are 16-20 all-time against the Bison, and after Saturday's loss, they are tied 14-14 all-time with Coppin State. The Lady Pirates are 17-5 against Bethune-Cookman; 22-12 against Delaware State; 16-10 against Florida A&M; 28-6 against Maryland-Eastern Shore; 18-11 against Morgan State; 44-33 against Norfolk State; 17-12 against North Carolina A&T; and 20-10 against South Carolina State. Hampton has won three MEAC regular-season titles (1999, 2003, 2004 with Delaware State) and two MEAC Tournament titles (2003, 2004).
The Lady Pirates are 3-3 at the HU Convocation Center so far this season, opening the season with back-to-back home wins against Williams & Mary (71-66) on Nov. 19 and UNC-Wilmington (66-52) on Nov. 22. After losing 54-51 to Temple on Dec. 8 and falling 65-61 to East Carolina on Dec. 12, the Lady Pirates beat Radford 63-43 at the HU Convocation Center on Dec. 23 to snap a seven-game losing streak. Hampton has yet to win a MEAC home game this season, falling on Saturday 58-52 to Coppin State.
