NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will travel across the James River this Sunday, where they will face the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion University at 2 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
After opening the season with back-to-back wins against William & Mary and UNC-Wilmington, the Lady Pirates have lost six in a row – including a 65-61 loss on Dec. 12 against East Carolina at the HU Convocation Center. ODU will be playing its third straight home game, having lost six of its first seven games – including an 81-67 decision to Florida on Dec. 11.
ODU leads the all-time series with the Lady Pirates 4-0; the two teams haven't met since Nov. 30, 2002, when ODU beat Hampton 90-54 on a neutral court during the Paradise Jam. Hampton and ODU first met during the 1976-77 season, when the Lady Monarchs emerged with a 92-51 win. The first meeting between the two teams after Hampton's ascent into NCAA Division I came on Nov. 19, 1999, when ODU beat Hampton 91-64 at the ODU Fieldhouse. Hampton hosted ODU on Jan. 14, 2001, when the Lady Monarchs won 93-69. ODU has scored at least 90 points in all four meetings between the two schools. Sunday's game will be Hampton's first at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
For the first time since joining the Colonial Athletic Association, the Lady Monarchs did not win the conference title in 2008-09. Going 17-13 overall and 11-7 in the conference last season, ODU fell to Drexel in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament, snapping a streak of 17 consecutive conference titles. Three Lady Monarchs earned All-CAA honors: Tiffany Green was named First Team All-CAA, while Jessica Canady was named Second Team All-CAA and Jen Nuzzo was an All-Academic First Team selection.
Losing three starters from last year's team – Green, Nuzzo and Jazzminn Walters – the Lady Monarchs were picked to finish third in the CAA this season. Canady, the lone senior on this year's team, was named to the Preseason First Team. Junior Shadasia Green is leading the Lady Monarchs in scoring, averaging 12.7 points a game, while Tia Lewis is averaging 12.6 a contest to go along with a team-high 9.3 rebounds a game. Jasmine Parker is third on the team in scoring with an average of 11.0 points a game.
ODU is scoring 60.6 points a game, while giving up 75.6 points a night on defense. The Lady Monarchs are being out-rebounded by an average of 41.9-37.0 per game.
The Lady Pirates are 30-34 all-time against teams from the Colonial Athletic Association, including 11-10 against William & Mary and 1-2 against UNC-Wilmington. Hampton is also 5-5 against George Mason; 1-1 against Georgia State; 0-2 against James Madison; 0-4 against Old Dominion; 0-1 against Towson; and 2-6 against Virginia Commonwealth. The Lady Pirates also went 10-3 against Richmond when the Spiders were a member of the CAA. After opening the season with back-to-back wins over William & Mary and UNC-Wilmington, the Lady Pirates will look to sweep the CAA slate for the season on Sunday at Old Dominion.
After falling 64-46 to Richmond on Nov. 24 and 84-71 at Southern Methodist on Nov. 27, the Lady Pirates fell 48-47 at Howard on Dec. 5 to move to 0-3 on the road so far this season. The Lady Pirates went 6-10 on the road in 2008-09, including a 3-5 road mark in conference play. Hampton won three of its last five road games last season, including wins over South Carolina State, Winston-Salem State and Norfolk State. Hampton will look for its first road win of the season, but the Lady Pirates are 6-10 all-time at Howard.
